Deputy spokeswoman at the PM's office Ratchada Thanadirek said at the weekend that various ministries and other organisations had been tasked with coming up to changes in the land ownership laws inThailand.

And their considerations could result in law changes as early as 2022.

Ratchada was referring to last week's decisions to try and attract well heeled foreigners, retirees, workers and those with much needed skills to the country over the next five years to boost economic development.

They would get long term visas and Smart Visas and not have to do 90 day reporting.

It involves tax breaks and being able to work for employers both in Thailand and abroad and would aid so-called digital nomads.

One of the main features of the new proposals is land ownership in Thailand, a hot chestnut that has been debated for years.

Ratchada said on Saturday that the Interior Ministry and Treasury would be working on changes to the law that could come in next year.

Others involved in the process are the Office of the National and Economic and Social Development, the Board of Investment Office and the Royal Thai Police.

Pressed about whether people who would be eligible to own land must be married to Thais or not the spokeswoman said that everyone would have to wait and see what was decided.

So far the plans that are proposed would have a five year validity period but that could be subsequently extended, reported Thai Rath yesterday.

Then they take back 51%.  There's too many lawyers and auditors minting it by creating companies to ever allow such a measure.  The estate where I lived had 62 houses.  Covid exiled 3 or 4 & they had to sell up.  The houses were all bought by Thais. (2 as weekend cottages.)  Mr Meechai, there's a glut of houses standing empty, built by those who daren't put money in the bank.  Why not allow farangs to buy these?

It is so clear with this that 90 day reporting is about keeping us in our place.

How much of the resistance to 90 day reporting is about the why rather than about the how?

So exemption from 90 day reporting is only for the well heeled - at what wealth level do people cease to be a threat to "National security." ? It is so clear with this that 90 day reporting is about keeping us in our place.

It doesn't say that.

1 says for well off foreigners

2 says just retirees

Looks like they are copying Australia

My understanding from other sources is that they are considering it for retirees on the proposed 10y higher income/deposit in bank/bonds ONLY.

Why would you do that? Also, do you think rich people should get citizenship over poor people?

So finally the penny has dropped, and they had to have an economy calamity to come up with this plan, if only they would thought about about it years ago and not now, out of desperation, they'd be laughing all the way to bountiful prosperity...
