The level of happiness in Thailand has reduced over the past few years, according to a number of indices and surveys. With the COVID-19 pandemic taking its toll on the country’s economy, people feel uncertain about their living, while their daily expenses remain very high.

On a global scale, Thailand is ranked 48 out of 149 countries, according to The World Happiness Report 2021, a significant drop from 2017-2019 when the country was ranked 44th. The report is primarily based on levels of GDP, life expectancy, generosity, social support, freedom and corruption.

Another survey, conducted in May 2021 by the Economic and Business Forecasting Centre of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, also shows that Thailand’s contentment has decreased significantly as the “happiness” index among Thai people was recorded at 27.7, the lowest since the survey was first conducted back in 2006. The number was a drop from 30.6 in April. The survey also predicted that the number will decrease further for June-August.

  • Nope, I'm still perfectly happy here. Maybe even happier now I don't need to queue for yearly extensions. I hope they never allow the tourists to clog up immigration offices again.

Generally I think people are happiest when they are striving to achieve something, but not struggling.

Having a goal focuses the mind......the extremes of having everything come to you or simply struggling to make ends meet results in unhappiness.

Having said that I would agree with Diana Does that it is better to be rich and unhappy rather than poor and unhappy.

Give her a phone and a plate or 2 or 3 of food and you will see her hapiness.

It's pretty funny.

In top 7 are Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

And many of us here are dying to get away from our cold climates and live in places like Thailand.

So screw the happiness chart ????

The level of happiness has deteriorated dismally, globally IMHO.

The advancement of technology definitely has contributed to this.

Just observe, the interactions between members of these 'anonymous forums'...

People are rude, intolerant, abusive and makes enemies out of total strangers because the other has a different opinion... yes, ones true self come out when one is behind a keyboard, hidden under a cloak of anonymity.

Unhappiness does not totally depend on money, colour or race... just ones attitude and  general mental status.

People who are rude to me get put on ignore.

I don't read rude.

My family all appear happy, me 65, her 40, her 23, him 10.

3 generations of happy people.

I envy the writer their firm grasp of the obvious.

What Diana said has always been highly debateable; during my lifetime ive experienced being both Poor and Rich in monetary terms but being unhappy is being unhappy and  to me personally having money made no difference, when i was unhappy it didn't matter how much money i had in the bank !

Yea, what he said.  Went out & about to tourist destinations I would have never visited, since too congested and overpriced due to supply & demand.  Thailand has never been  better for domestic tourist.

Long Live Covid  ????  OK, just the restrictions, except that silly mask thing, not that I bother.

Ridiculous article. Of course most countries have been less happy over the past two years. Many people may prefer actually working from home etc, but how can sane people be happier during a pandemic where so many have lost their lives.

Not quite.  It was good for two or three years after that.

I came here from Greenland, was happy there and are happy here in Thailand.

Both places are more free to do what you like than where I came from in the first place.

Covid , Debt, No tourists, minimal help from the Government,

you can understand why the level of happiness has deteriorated,

but it's not just Thailand , it has affected most of the World

if that is what makes you happier, maybe spring for an agent... they fill in all the forms etc... no endless writing my address and passport info etc... I have to get the bank letter but that just means sitting in the bank for a while doing nothing...

one time I just went to the agents office, signed my name as they flipped the pages, they drove me to Immigration where my photo was taken and 5 minutes later was back in the car going back to the agents office...

they also send me an email notification when 90 day is coming due etc etc..

Yes, I can do it myself, and did for many years but it is a nice luxury item... money can in some ways, buy some ease of life.

That's called keeping busy - [so that you don't have to think about other things in life that might be more important or upsetting - like whether or not you are happy??]

Happiness comes from within and your outlook on life, also being able to adapt to changing situations, from my personal experience it also helps in 90% of the time to have a healthy bank balance ????

Just have to talk to China. They will have another one ready.

Agree 100%......it is a fine balancing act for individuals and/or governments.

On the edge of struggling, but with the hope of better things to come in the future .........one reason for governments of all shades to also have an enemy for the populace to focus upon.......immigrants, Jews, Communists, Wokists, ANTIFA.
