Why didn't you have the proper certificate with you ? What did you present to them at first ?

Exactly.....also the map rubbish. Should have had that with him.

Just another unprepared farang trying to obtain an extension.

15 years!! Must be a slow learner.

It seems you (also) want to play some kind of game with them. Did you want to p$@# them off? Or why did you do that? And do you think such behavior will help you in the future of not? Obviously I

  • They only love our wallets.

  • Maybe your time here is up. Once the rose tinted glasses come off you realize why so many Thais want to get out of the place.

I live in a village is rural but reasonably  close to Prachuap town

i have no real problems with locals but then no real desire to be their friend or part of the community

i can speak thai a few years ago 2 old ladies were talking about me quite disrespectfully in local shop ( a quick i can understand you now shut your mouth's sorted that out) village relations are now cordial

i like where i live because of its location not the people

Immigration 90 days is a minute affair if that no need to talk other hello goodbye

Renewal i use an agent no desire to get involved with them

i admit like my dogs better than most people of any desciption  for that matter

Somehow I much doubt that this was the initial intention for the bulk of the farangs moving to Thailand. They were dreaming in the home countries to come here and support extended families in the sticks and so on? By the time they have figured what's going on, they were too much invested to have other choices.

And fair enough.

People Wai to me here and I wave it of. I do not Wai,  a wave is as good as a wink.

He should have been prepared but the map thing is another dumb "invention" by the Thai immigration. There is a thing called address, which is used in most of the countries to find physical location. If Lazada and Thailand Post can find where I live from the address provided, the immigration should be able to do the same. Again it is what it is.

Does Thailand genuinely welcome Farang?

A tough question and one that different people will have differing views on.

Personally, I've always been made very welcome in Thailand.  Yes, as many have, I've faced ridiculous bureaucracy but what many foreigner's don't appreciate is that Thai people also have to put up with it.

I have no doubt there will be more accommodating places in which to settle but for me, your question would be easier to answer if you asked 'Why do Foreigners Choose Thailand'.

In that case my answer would be easy - girls, girls and girls.  When you're the wrong side of 40 and the hair starts growing out of your nose rather than on your head - those pretty little things that you are attracted to start becoming a part of your history not your future. If you had the choice would you buy a shiny new car or a rusty old one that's become saggy and tired?  In our Western homelands we quite often don't have that choice.

I began travelling to Thailand 20 years ago (yes, for the naughty business) following a very tough divorce.  Like many after such an event, I thought my life was over - I thought I'd never be in a relationshiop again because I was simply not attracted to what was on offer in my age group.  I've always kept myself in shape but Western women seem to have a problem (possibly genuine) doing the same.  It wasn't an age thing really, I find well kept older women very attractive - there's just not many of them in the West. In Thailand it seemed, your age isn't a barrier to meeting attractive women.

I wasn't ready (and I'm still not) for the pipe and slippers, I still ride my bike like a luntatic, still go clubbing and I'm still vertical when many younger guys fall over. Thailand it seemed, gave me the opportunity to continue doing what I liked doing for a while longer.

Yes, there are many pitfalls and you have to be very careful about why that little Thai dolly bird wants to know you.  Those pitfalls are common knowledge and I see no mileage is discussing them all over again,

Perhaps just one event in my life in Thailand sums up why I chose to make the country my home (even though I still work abroad) - a few years ago I was sitting in a Kasikorn bank opening an account.  The pretty young staff member going through my paperwork said "Oh, you are single, you don't have a wife Khun Philip?" to which I replied "No, no wife, I'm divorced".  The reply? "I am 30 and have no boyfriend"..........I knew I was in heaven and it had nothing to do with the 3 million baht I'd put forward to open my account. ????

I'm now married to a girl almost half my age and very happy when I'd previously thought that would be impossible. I'll be pushing up daisies before she becomes saggy and tired.

All those who criticise my attitude don't know me!! I have lived here very happily for 15 years and have thousands of very good Thai friends. It was the obnoxious power hungry Immigration Officer I was criticising. I have never had any problems at that Office before but she started off refusing to accept the Certificate of Insurance written by a well respected Company and they said they have never had their Certificates of Insurance refused previously but they very quickly rewrote it in the way this Immigration Officer wanted. I challenge anyone who is humiliated and demeaned in the way I was by this particular Officer not to react the way I did. I was calm and polite but I wasn't going to give her anything else to complain about which is why I wrote the map in a way that left no doubt that I knew the area well. I wrote what I did because I truly believe Prayut who definitely hates foreigners, is training all Public Servants to be as difficult as possible with Foreigners. I never intended to imply the Thai people aren't friendly and welcoming but I really believe the Government is determined to drive us all out

If I had a dollar for every time I have seen this type of thread In the 14 years I have been a member to this forum.

Well let's just say I'll have a lot of dollars LOL

Thailand was fine before you came, and Thailand will be fine after you are gone.

To answer the question of this thread, Let me just say, they like us a lot more than we like them. And how much we like them has been apparent in this and other forum over the years I have been here..

Are Immigration officials in any country "welcoming" to foreigners? I didn't think so. Why would Thailand be any different?

Real societal acclimation and integration is the key without bearing your pathetic Farang soul.

I've witnessed that most don't understand nor know how to configure their lives.

Otherwise, you'll always consider yourself a foreigner and will always be treated as one.

Far too many retired grouchy farangs are problem/stress magnets, getting upset over things they created.  Then once their stress level is raised they say it's the Thai's fault.  I've seen that type of situation again and again in my near 15 years of living here.

One one recent one was when a farang was venting off steam inside the immigration office because he had had an overstay due to the office being closed for a holiday, he was going off on the Thai lady with something about why wasn't he notified of the closure the last time he was there,  and after a few minutes of his tantrum she shot back "Everybody know about holiday! Only you not know!"  I almost wanted to openly applaud her...555.

That's very surprising because it's Thai government policy to rotate government workers every few years: public prosecutors, judges, teachers, MoE staff, MoT staff, administrative staff of all kinds, medical staff, and certainly the officers who work in my local immigration office too. It's also frequent in the private sector, notably banks.

I'm not saying that all government workers get rotated every 2 or 3 years, but I know  many that have been, and I know for a fact it's policy.

In the UK the Prime Minister and the Minister for Home Affairs have explicitly instructed immigration officers to create a "hostile environment" for would be immigrants. Thank goodness Thailand is so welcoming by comparison.

But it's true that many people who wear uniforms seem to get off on the power it confers. Chin up my friend.

Huh ?

Thousands? Wow! My sincere condolences.

I find easiest to accept on government related occasions, ok we will be doing this the Thai way. May take a little longer, may seem like it's not making sense, but in the end the Thai people get there, so I leave it to my wife, and everybody is happy.

.....and still they continue not to get it. Unfortunately, a very Farang trait.

If you know all the officers in the immigration office then i am sure they all know you and that's where the problem lies .

Sorry, the laugh emoji was meant as a positive feedback.

This thread is not posted in Visa/Immigration and is not an ask for help, but a complaint. so imo open for commenting.

Sorry again if I'm wrong.

Most Thais know why most farang want to come to Thailand. That they're nevertheless quite welcoming is quite surprising. ????

To say people venture to Thailand just for the girls is incorrect to put it politely.

Your attitude is rather sad to be frank .

On positive note I find AseanNow such a great resource.

Banter is normal.

For me I try help.

It's always nice to have many PM messages  for detailed help.

Bottom line we farang need help each other.

As far as being welcome. I take this pic now..

Why?

Obviously I don't know you but it seems there are many people who live here among Thais without any problems. And there are some people who seem to attract problems. What do you think why that might happen?

I am convinced that there exists a "sub file" at least on provincial IO records that flag certain aspects of the "treatment" of individuals presenting for extensions  etc.

Does Thailand genuinely welcome "farang" ? I would say that yes if said farang do not attempt to challenge non immediate existing "rights" as non citizens in the face of a discretionarily empowered Official .  I have been witness to and subjected to same attitude by western officialdom on occasion.
