Three British tourists in Hua Hin have tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19, Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Sathien Charoenruen said on Friday (Dec 24).

The tourists were from two different groups to travel to Thailand.

Both groups arrived in Thailand via the Phuket Sandbox on Nov 26 and Dec 3, respectively.

Think that is a pretty safe bet considering they arrived 3 and 4 weeks ago respectively. But is suits some people's agenda to keep it touristy

Unless the test results for Omicron are only just available from the tests they took in Phuket, between 3 and 4 weeks ago, then these infections we're almost certainly acquired in Thailand. Eithe

"No further details were released", it says in the original article. Bet they weren't because pretty sure 99% they acquired the infection in Thailand. Probably only picked up because of the spotlight and 100% testing regime of foreigners. If they started looking in the Thai population I'm sure they'd find many more.

So they caught it in the country more than likely !

Wonder why they were tested or did they all feel that bad they went to get tested ?

Again tourists....  But I am almost sure that a the menatime many times Thai people have Omicron too... As another writes , that this virus spread more and quickly that other strains , it is impossible that no Thais are being infected yet..so if 3 tourists cam to Hua Hin with Omicron, there are already a lot infected people there. But the truth we will never know

About as much proof as needed. Its time for the government to officially announce Omicron is already in the community and spreading rapidly instead of playing the blame game constantly.

The duty of Public Health is to be transparent and communicate effectively.

Sounds to me they caught it while in Thailand. Within the last week or so at that.

End of December test positive, so where did they get it from?

Either way it shows yet another reason why the testing regime here needs to be ramped up to discover the true extent of the virus in the general population. 50 thousand tests a day in a population of 70 million is pathetic.

That Omicron is everywhere. Spreading like wildfire. Give up (and get vaccinated)!

Or go and test 1.5 million people a day like they do in the UK and cause unnecessary panic.

There's no panic in the UK just a weariness at how long this is dragging on.

Both my daughters there are Frontline NHS workers and are spending Christmas in isolation because their kids have caught covid in school recently. One of my grandkids is not well at all which is worrying.

Thank the lord it wasn't 3 Chinamen or we would never have seen this topic, but it could be a Christmas story of 3 wise Brits bringing gifts ????

It's already here  and been for a while already

Just waiting for more people to be tested and the numbers to  increase

It's not rocket science

Perhaps the headline should read 'British tourists catch covid in Thailand' but hell no - we can't say that.

Nah, they’d run out of farangs to lay the blame on then! ????

From what I've read Omicron is safer than the vaccines, and will probably be better at protecting against future infections....

UK did 1,670,000 tests other day in one day - In other words an entire month of thai testing in one day

Yes it is in the wild and has been no doubt with that.  I am pretty sure it did not just come in with tourists and was not spread around Thailand by them.  One has to understand that this variant spreads rapidly and many have only cold like symptoms for which they more than likely are not getting tested for, after all it is an upper respiratory tract virus and not much different than what people have experienced before.

The US understands this, and even though cases are expanding there they have undone the travel ban from the SA countries that the rest of the world has banned travel from as well.

Lateral flow tests? Seems to be the trusted test in UK. ????

Surely not 1.600.000 PCR and sequencing.

Not from soap or showering.

It is easier to stigmatize tourists when we know that diplomats, airplane pilots travel a lot, who is the real propagator at the start we will not be ?

Cambodia did the same (lifted the ban).

This article has more holes than a Swiss cheese! If they arrived via the Phuket sandbox, where did they 'pick up' the virus? On the way to Hua Hin? Or, perhaps, are the tests on Phuket not working?
