78 people killed on Thailand’s roads on Monday, 1,212 in December

Daily News continued their daily campaign and tally of fatalities on Thailand's deadly roads.

 

They reported that there were 78 dead at the scene of road accidents reported on Monday. 

 

This brought the total for December so far to 1,212 fatalities.

 

The year total to date is 13,049 with the same period last year resulting in 14,567 deaths. 

 

They made no comment on the apparent "improvement" over last year.

 

Instead in their headline they said that "going easy on the gas would make you safe".

 

They reported on the death of Army United goalkeeper Suphachart Apichatyanon, 33, on a powerful motorcycle who collided with a large truck turning into a sugar refinery in Kanchanaburi, as reported earlier by ASEAN NOW.

 

The total dead in 2019 was 14,907 and the following year was 14,825.

 

But these are just at the scene deaths.

When those who die on the way to and at hospitals the figure is much higher and probably around 25,000 a year.

 

Around 80% are thought to be motorcyclists. 

 

It is a sobering thought that if nothing is done to stem the carnage then a million people will die on the Thai roads in the next 40 years. 

 

As a new year approaches - with the standard response being to focus on the "Seven Deadly Days" rhetoric, there appears little political will for anything long lasting to address the issue, notes ASEAN NOW.

Some simple measure may help, 

 

1 Enforce crash helmet all passengers on motor cycles, no helmet bike confiscated, sold no quibble on the spot, walk home.

 

Same bikes with no insurance or tax, may help get many poorly maintained bikes I see daily, some driven by kids who surely cannot have valid insurance?

 

2 For delinquent motorists bans for the rich, fines for the poor so act as a big disincentive. Lifetime bans for recidivists 3 strikes etc.

 

3 I know it's radical but prosecute those who pull cops to their death in Ferraris, this may prove a step to far as it seems permissable at present.

 

4 More roundabouts / traffic circles especially on major intersections where the U turn gamble often leads to smashes, I see so many pieces of shattered brake lights near junctions.

 

5 All traffic fines violations to be paid to nd at Provincial Hospital HQ to benefit the health system and stop officers pocketing the money. Offenders to do compulsory voluntary work one day a week in accident departments, sluice clean, wash floors, push gurneys etc.

 

6 Random stop check as in most states for documents give each officer a quota 3 a day etc., No fines payable on spot.

...............Because the number is so small (against the numbers killed) that it can be classed as statistically insignificant/irrelevant and not the result of any "initiatives".

 

Forget all the useful suggestions folks.

 

The default mode for the "Executive" is inertia and carelessness, unless they can accrue wealth or personal power by acting otherwise.

 

There is no will to do anything that does not enhance those factors.

 

There doesn't have to be, because the people in charge are in no way politically, socially or legally accountable to the "people".

 

They are conscienceless.

 

They have no concept of what it means to possess one.

 

They live entirely for self, family and clique.........solely to acquire dominion and wealth.

 

They recognise only feudal loyalties and obligation.

 

You have stepped "Through the Looking Glass".

 

What part of "they really don't give a **** " is not getting through to those banging out the "needs to be done" lists?

Face facts - most of those 80% died due to not riding to conditions.

Or riding impaired. Or speeding. Or both.

Look at that blue bike - serious speed. Cane truck driver looks in the mirror, sees a light way back, or way out in front of him. Starts his turn. Then realizes that the bike is doing 200 Kph and is RIGHT THERE !

Nothing for him to do - not his fault.

Rider at fault 100% for being an ash whole.

Why do they report the daily numbers makes no difference 

Considering the way some  people drive with no consideration to safety

Not wearing safety  helmets on motor bikes no driving licences and so on 

Nothing will change in Thailand until Police strictly.  enforce the Rules

They almost all have amulets and monks have blessed the vehicles. Helmut and such are western ways of avoiding karma, not the eastern way.  Those 78 that died the other day; how many were HiSo?  That is the rate that is closely watched by those with true power.

78 dead at the scene.  You can probably add another 25% that made it to the hospital before they died. 

So 97 is probably closer to the real number.  Plus many others that didn't die but were seriously injured.

A piece of paper or plastic does not bestow skill to operate a motorcycle.

Training helps, practice helps a lot more

Re M/C road safety. Training will only happen if mandated to be done at school.
