China has offered two used Song-class submarines to the Royal Thai Navy (RTN), but they need to be reconditioned before they can become operable, according to the RTN.

 

A Chinese state enterprise in charge of managing decommissioned Chinese submarines reportedly approached the Thai military attaché in Beijing, offering to deliver the submarines to Thailand, but they did not specify whether the submarines were to be provided free of charge or whether there will a token charge as a gesture of friendship.

 

The matter had been raised by China with a working committee of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, but there has been no confirmation.

Pattaya to Koh Larn in a defunct Chinese sub or a southern Islands tour, I can see the tourist potential but little else, people normally get paid to dismantle unwanted navy vessels - but of course that won't work, there must be a budget to fudget  into pockets

Accident waiting to happen when these make their way here.

If the Chinese are getting shut of them they will not be worth very much and will probably cost a fortune to renovate - Maybe the Chinese are afraid Thailand will go Nuclear .............................LOL  

So at the end those subs will cost more than new.. Nice pocket lining.. ????

Can line them up with the Japanese trains. 

What's with buying up all this old junk?

China obviously has an over supply of scrap metal delivered from other countries. Time to get rid of some of their scrap. Maybe they should fill them up with old plastic at the same time it will solve two problems and also help to keep them afloat.

Of course now you've got your free no strings attached gift of submarines from China you'll be wanting to dig the Kraa Canal with loans from China and Chinese construction companies "winning" the contract. NOTHING from China is ever free.

Was reported in BP that the new subs are "delayed" because Germany won't supply the engines for them.

As the Gulf of Thailand is to shallow for subs they can probably be kept at the submarine base the Chinese have built in Cambodia.

Seems they were offered to Thailand 15 years ago quote :

 

China offered the 039 submarine for sale to Thailand in 2007. However, the Royal Thai Navy lacks the infrastructure to support submarine this time. ^[3] Thailand later ordered S26T submarine, a export version of the Type 039A .

you can bet these will be well past their use by date ....

China doesn't give anything away for free ever.   It's obviously more profitable to do a deal with Thailand than cutting them up for scap .

 

Great mooring blocks.....use Chinese anything would likely be dodgy....but a used submarine!

Dated but in good condition (these are decommissioned and need refurb.) reasonably capable, for a 1980s design

 

Will they come with torpedoes and cruise missiles?

They'll be outrageously overpriced, as will the refurb, they'll be launched amid great fanfare, break down during sea trials, get towed home (if they don't sink) and thereafter quietly left to rust and rot, like all the lovely antique aircraft at RTAF 44 Wing in Chiang Mai.

The old " Dads Army " sketch that involves the use of Brushes comes to mind.

The Newspaper out of Bangkok this Morning, stated that these two Subs were to be offered to Thailand because there was a delay in the Manufacture of the Subs Thailand has on order with them, and the Subs were to be used for " Training purposes ".

I cannot quite figure out how you can " Train " on a piece of decommissioned Equipment- no matter what it is.

Apparently, the German Company that was to provide the Engines for the new Subs, have stopped the supply due to the fact that the Engines were to be used in Subs, made by China, but supplied to another Country.

I think many Countries will be looking at this " Gift "from China to Thailand very closely.

Good...Thai Airways can use them, they anyway are going to the bottom!

China (unsurprisningly) has been found out by the Germans trying to use 'dual use' technology in definace of an arms embargo...and then trying to sell the tech to Thailand in a Song Class Sub - Thus showing their guilt in defying the arms embargo and not using the dual use tech for civilian use. So the Germans have told the Chinese they will no longer sell them the engines.

The rules don't apply to China. If they got one to copy that should be enough (although it won't be the quality of the original no matter how hard they try)
