Thai police tell public to stop "three beeps" craze - it's dangerous and you'll be fined 500 baht

Thai Rath reported on the latest viral craze on the internet saying it was dangerous and illegal.

People are filming children in vehicles and by the side of the road making three finger hand gestures encouraging truckers to sound three beeps on their horns.

ASEAN NOW notes that this can be seen in the light of the gesture being connected with anti-government protests.

Deputy at the RTP Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat who is in charge of traffic matters said it must stop NOW.

It can cause accidents.

He said that it was dangerous for children to be beside the road being filmed like this, caused truckers to lose concentration and could cause annoyance and distraction to other road users.

He cited 1979 laws saying that beeping of the horn is only allowed when used to avoid accidents.

He asked truckers not to comply with requests to beep as they would be breaking the law and could be fined 500 baht.

The three finger gesture grew to prominence in 2014 after opposition to the coup mounted by current Thai PM Prayuth Chan-ocha who is still hanging on to power.

It is a symbol of calls for more democracy in Thailand taken from resistance shown in the well know Hunger Games movie trilogy.

Simple just get rid of Prayuth job done. They have someone in charge of traffic matters came as a surprise.

  • I'm relieved there are absolutely no other traffic issues in this country which need to be tackled. This, apparently, is the most pressing problem.

Good luck that I don't use fb or twitter or any of that and I don't know that these things exist.

Ok, I didn't know until a minute ago.

This has to be one of the most daft comments of the year!!! With the amount of beeping that goes on around here, there must be a helluva lot of near accidents!! Continual playing a beeping tune for a kilometre or so at all times of the day and night!!. 555

It has been going on for several months now - and the tight uniforms have just realised it's significance - and have reacted in the only way they know , bossy lectures and meaningless threats.

Toot toot toot!

As if you need any more noise in this place.

Retards.

Was on a visa run bus once when the cops stopped it and looked for something to fine the driver for. As it was a new bus they could not find anything so in the end told him to sound the horn- fined 500 baht for not being loud enough !

This is not a form of opposition and is not deemed a threat to the powers that be.

The Thai people blow their horns for a shrine, nothing wrong with it... Even at landdepartment they ask when and how many times you have to blow the horn and now the police comes with the ridiculous comment it could be a anti Government thing be.. Everything with three will be forbidden??? Three beer?? Anti government, three persons, anti governement, three rings on your hand? ant government and so on.. If the police first started to their normal jobs it would be safer in Thailand, instead of making stupid comments over nothing

On my way into town from my Isaan village I pass an ancient temple.

Because I cannot wai whilst driving, I was told by by wife that I should beep the horn 3 times, as do other passing motorists.

The BiB should be concentrating on other safety matters like non wearing of helmets etc etc????

Try telling that to the food delivery drivers, couriers and postmen.

They all sound their horns when delivering to places around here. It saves them from having to dismount.

How to bring happiness and reconciliation to the Thai people?

Punish them.

  • Popular Post

3 fingers?   I've always gotten by just using the middle one!????

  • Popular Post

Beeping the horn unnecessarily should of course be banned. If used for nonsense purposes, including when passing temples, spirit houses and the like, people will not know when a horn is blown as a real warning.

Well go to Mumbai or New Delhi in India and other countries/cities, where they continuously beep every 10 seconds for no reason at all. The noise is deafening and achieves nothing.

Thai Drivers don't need anything or anyone to make them have an accident; they are very capable of causing one themselves !

Perhops they are honking their horns to avoid having an accident with the people on the side of the road.
