Marrying a 17 year old Thai girl in the village

No...its not me...

My long time GF has 7 brothers and one older sister most of whom are working overseas in Korea, Taiwan, Israel....etc

Her family is way up north on the Mekong.  Mum and Dad have some nice land that backs onto a giant fresh water lake.

Her oldest brother (58) lives in Mum and Dads house and has a couple of little wooden boats that he takes out on the lake to catch fish....mostly small stuff that sells for 50-60 baht a kilo.

On a good day he will make 300 baht and does not get out every day because of weather.  He is basically broke.

I should say up front that her family as a whole is very good.  They have never asked me for a cent.  My GF makes her own money and sends some up to Mum and Dad when she can.  They are fine because they have so many kids (working overseas).

Anyway the older brother rang up drunk late the other night, asking my GF to transfer him a couple of 100 baht so he could eat moo gattat (Pork Barbeque).  This has happened a handful of times in the past but I have been with my girl a long time.

My GF told him to go home and did not transfer him any money.

Yesterday, my GF informs me that the older brother is getting married to a 17 year old girl from the village (his first marriage by the way and no kids to date) and, I quote:

  1. The girl is very attractive apparently (I have requested a photo) and has several boys and men in the village that want to marry her, but she has choosen her brother...get this... because he has a stable income with his fishing boats
  2. He is already sleeping with the girl (she is staying in the GF's Mum and Dad's house) and has been for at least 12 months
  3. The girl's parents are happy to ignore the underage sex issue provided my GF's brother pays them 10K baht
  4. The brother has asked to lend 10K from my GF's older sister who is working in Korea
  5. The date for the pukan marriage ceremony in the village, and the sinsot amount, has yet to be set.  But at this stage the sinsot is expected to be in the 20k baht range
  6. Source of money for sinsot has yet to be confirmed, but I image will also be borrowed from sister in Korea
  7. My GF has again asked me when we are having our pukan ceremony (this issue comes up about once every year) but has been ignored by me, for well over a decade now

As you can see there is a whole raft of morality and TIT issues that should provide for an interesting discussion and susequent thread.  For those of you seeking to marry a young hot Thai girl in her teens have you considered buying two little wooden canoes yet?

Over to you...

There is no legal issue, age of consent in Thailand is 15 unless the parents forbid it, but sounds like they give their OK.

It's consensual, she's above the age of consent (15) and the age to marry (17), the parents are happy - there are no problems.

The problem is that as a 58 year old he still can't take care of himself. Needs to "borrow" money to buy consent of the girls parents, the sinsot, the wedding party. Then getting a couple of kids which he can't provide for too. Your GF and her sisters need to tell him he won't get any money and find a job or other business. Funny that he does have money to get drunk though.

Within the law, consenting adults etc, who is anyone to sit in judgement. As the Thais say "upto you" .

For those who somehow related to schools a.k.a. "teechas" - you meet thai kids daily personally and you got first hand experience with 'em.
My point is: even 17 years thai girl still has a mind of a child, unable to sort things rationally. Sorry to say that but its just a dumb kid. And not just a kid, but rural dumb kid from remote village. What consent?

Old fart lured her into "You show me yours I'll show you mine" game.
Disgusting!

Back when I was teaching English in NE... I think it was a school in Ban Phai.

I had one 17 year old girl student that like to practice her English with me.

I thought it was good fun until the last week of school. Just before she would of turned 18.,,she invited me to her home.....to meet her parents.

I told her I didn't have time as I needed to prepare for moving the day the school closed.

She looked at me with big sad eyes and told me we couldn't get married unless I met her folks.

I was out of town 15 minutes after checking out at the school.

I would also be ashamed if I was to fantasize about marriage.

What is a pukan ceremony ?

No way a 17 yr old will marry a broke 58 yr old.

I refuse to comment on all other issues arising from it.

Not gonna happen.

Not official, village wedding.

What are her prospects living in the village?  NONE really

As to him being wealthy sure he is.  He has a great bank that he can make withdrawals whenever he wants.

His sisters

For the girl's sake, I think the family needs to close the bank.  Then again you get a disgruntled brother who will make life miserable for mom and dad.

We don't know what the other guys are like but obviously, they have not made the same impression.

I would suggest that the GF and sisters get together with her and have a talk.

Does the family want to support another family?

No legal or moral issues here. Just common sense issues. Why on earth would anyone want to marry a 17 year old? Sure she likely has a great body. At least until the first kid arrives. But, what else? Anything to relate to? I totally understand getting with a younger woman. As long as there is some common ground. But, I think I suffer from the disease of CSR (common sense and reason).

This sounds like a trophy thing.

1). She's probably already pregnant.

2). Thinks 200-300 baht a day occasionally is a windfall.

There is virtually no chance of making a good living in Issan unless your a politician or already rich.

Beautiful cousin, 15 here is engaged to her 15 year old boyfriend.  Both families are borderline poverty.

Continuing life chain poverty.  Mostly ends up with the girls moving to Pattaya, Bangkok, etc and the man drinking all day in-between odd jobs and growing rice.

Nothing you can do.

Moral issues? There is plenty if you have any emphasis with people in need and what drives them to make such decisions.

There is plenty of options to make a good living in Isan if you have the guts to do something, and make a plan for future. It is a cultural thing that weighs them down, but many do make a good living still.
