Drinking After Hours in Pubs to Cost Up to 10,000 Baht Fine

Featured Replies

This is one of those dumbed down simplified sweeping actions that can impact anyone, rather than solely targeting those who behave antisocially and impact pubic safety.

The same idiots who cause issues are going to drink and cause problems whatever the time - but now, the innocent public face the risk of a 10,000 baht fine IF going 'over-time'....

Common sense is once again knee-capped by the inability of some in positions of authority to troubleshoot and achieve sensible solutions targeting any actual problem itself - these puritans just love their announcements - its like watching children, the response is always so backwards and juvenile.

Party time till midnight?? Another reason to give Thailand a wide berth!   Vietnam as an alternative looks better every day...

Welcome to Thailand.

Now put your wallet in the drop box after baggage reclaim.

Now board your return flight home.

Thank you, very big.

Have a nice day.

Come again. :jap:

Why even go that far. Book your flight then mail your cash directly to TAT. Stay home and watch YouTube vids of thailand.

Just more evidence this country is run by complete morons. Not long before some sort of backflip where "special tourist zones" and up market hotels will be exempted.

Absolutely ridiculous joke. They're begging for tourists but as usual do everything they can to make visiting Thailand less enjoyable. I doubt this will ever be enforced (beyong brown envelopes), but if it does and I actually get fined (because I *will* be drinking after hours) then the first thing I do is start looking for where to move next. I moved to Thailand because it was fun, if they take away the fun then there's no point staying.

Does this include pubs owned by government officials?

No of course not, they have their own laws, 24/7 mostly.

Experts suggest these penalties could impact Thailand's nightlife businesses,

I doubt that very much....

does this include lock in's on buddhist alcohol free days ?

I thought that they lifted the ban on Buddha days.

So 10 customers would be a nice 100k payday and then say there were only 3 people in the bar 😄

Could never enforce this as too many get paid to turn a blind eye to this already and if enforced you may as well cancel full moon parties .

I have absolutely no idea what time bars are supposed to open/close!
Khon Kaen is not a tourist area, but the Thai bars are open until 3 Am with music blasting. I often see some bars still open at 7 or 8 Am. (no music)

How messed up is this?

If they did their job and policed the venues, there would not be anywhere for folks to drink after hours.

What are you insinuating???? Outrageous! Are you suggesting they should work?

Wait till you get to 86, it wont matter at all then!

nothing about down the road.. this is the perfect chance for the cops in tourist cities to rake up the money quickly.. One bar a night. since no tourist will know that they must stop drinking what is on their tables at a certain time. This new amendment will surely destroy any nightlife should the police actually cash in on it and social media exposing it.

It is not the patrons fault if the bars continue to stay open and allow the patrons to sit inside still. Of course they would want to finish their drink on their table.

The only way to ensure the tourist is not affected will be to make sure all partons are thrown out of the premises prior to the time they must finish their drinks.

After hours takeaways sounds like a plan?

It's interesting that Thailand, the land of the free, has far more alcohol regulations and restrictions than Muslim Malaysia and Communist Laos & Vietnam.

You have ever been in Dubai?

I find this a bit strange. It’s almost an admission that they are unable to police venues that serve alcohol out of licensed hours.

Of course, 10k per customer adds up to a lot more than 10k per venue. So there’s that.

How Thai. Fine the patrons but not the establishment.

It is and remains a backward country and is starting to resemble a Muslim country more and more.

Someone please correct me but what are the bar hours in the UK  and most U.S. states  I do ont think that there are many bars that are open until 4 legally

So how can yousay it is backwards.

As to the 4 am close I know that bars still sell up until 3

I wonder whether tourists actually know the closing time of pubs when they see people still drinking at 3am?

exactly, tourists are not aware of closing times, they assume if a venue is still open they have special permission and licence to do so, to put this on the customer is fundamentally wrong and very obviously a grift to gouge money out of customers

The ban is on the SALE of booze

by that logic you'd have to have an open tab or actually in the process of paying to get busted

And they wonder why tourism is suffering?!?

It is impossible to stay at the tippy top of countries that have implemented tourism policies that have been successful for decades in attracting tourists.  It is insane how people have criticized authorities for decades  while the numbers keep growing and almost exponentially.  I wish some of the members on this forum shared Thailand's policy makers grasp of tourism.  Maybe I could walk the streets at night in Phuket and Chiang Mai without suffocating in the mass of tourists.  Below portrays how unsuccessful...

"The changes target those continuing to consume alcohol in venues after legal hours."

Legal hours?? Let me guess no specifics given in oder to allow qualified people in high regard the discretion to determine the exact hours.

I guarantee bars owned by police will remain open.. haven't they had these crackdowns before... Actually many times before...as many have said, tourism is down, every year since covid restrictions were lifted..every year tourists numbers lower than previous years, by now it must be close to 20%, yet we see Thailand continually creating more restrictions. Just how crazy.

I don't really believe this will happen, but it's already all over social media, had some friends coming over in December, they are already talking about cancelling

because of regulations concerning after hours drinking? Are they alcoholics?

and the bar owners ?

Exactly, in most countries the establishment would be the one fined and if continuously abusing, their license revoked.

Here is a thought my addled brain spewed out: law prohibits SALE of alcohol after midnight, right? How about a bar that sells some sort of script tickets before midnight, with soused patrons redeeming tickets for more booze after midnight?

Another thought,  why not just go out and start drinking earlier?

i am curious if this new amendment can be extended to having a drink in your home or porch or balcony even. The laws said you can not purchase alcohol except during their regulated times. Now, amended to say you will get a fine if caught drinking outside of those times permitted. They do not specify at a bar or in a residence as it was not stated in the OP. So I am guessing that anything is possible now that can give the police a chance to make you pay either a fine or a bribe to not get into trouble for this.

That's what I would do, but there are so many it seems that find some sort of extra kick from staying up most or all of the night.
