How can I get either all of the stray dogs removed or silenced?

I live in a tiny village in Isaan. Since I'm under the age of fifty, my ears still work well... too well. Sleep is damn near impossible sometimes. There are about ten to twenty nocturnal dogs in my neighborhood. I'm moving out of the country in March, mostly because of the nightly noise pollution. I refuse to do anything illegal, but I'm okay with losing face because I just don't give a damn. Do small villages have dog capture businesses? Should I hire folks with pickup trucks to capture the dogs and release them in another province? Chase stray dogs out of the neighborhood on foot while barking at them like a lunatic? Buy really big speakers and play the sounds of barking dogs and wolves on high at night so that nobody in the neighborhood sleeps? Put up anti-dog signs? What is an effective legal way to deal with this? I cannot overemphasize how little I care about what the others here think of me. When I first came here, I did... very much so. But seeing how they live, how they treat their animals, how little they care about sleep, I just don't care anymore. I just want to get some sleep at night while I count down the days until I can leave this country behind and never return. Any advice?

The advice you will get is to move - as this is an unmanageable issue in Thailand if living outside of a 'moo-baan'...

In Bangkok - I lived in a low rise in a 'wealthy area' (neighbours houses were huge - massive gardens, private pools etc) - there was no Soi dog problem in the area - I suspect because one of the wealthy and influential people paid someone to ensure there was no issue...

... Either that or there was a lack of 'resources' for the strays so they moved onto other areas where food and scraps is available.

In moo-baans its easier to control - there are no strays, they will be removed and thus the only issue might be with a neighbours dog - which can handled more easily by the juristic committee.

As far as dealing with the noise of dogs as you described - the options are extremely limited.

IF you are counting down the days and want to leave so badly - is there any reason you are not ?

If you are not sleeping etc - just leave earlier unless you are tied down to work etc ?

I have done that..the Thais laughed their arses off ! after that (before it was illegal) I chased them with an air gun just plastic pellets , that got me a threat of deportation due to

" I know someone in the immigration department" now I have a children's 'cap gun' which I fire

when the noise becomes a bit too much at 3 or 4 AM

Yep. Contracted until March.

I am now led to wonder as to why the op is so sleepless ?

Try using earplugs while running the fan.

Fortunately we don’t have that problem in these here parts.

That’s a bit drastic. Have you considered moving to another area?

I have, but the Thai way of life really isn't that appealing to me. Honestly I can't think of anything that was worth coming over here for. Thinking of going back to China.

There is another cure...sleeping pills for the stressed insomniac human ?

I take them. And wear earplugs. And have two jumbo electric fans at full blast to provide ambiance to try to muffle the barks.

Never used one, but there is sth called a "white noise machine" which produces loops of sounds that may help fall asleep and drown out background noise.

Lazada has them.

Even in the outskirts of Pattaya I've seen them use cages to catch dogs so you can do it, you just need to find out who. Here the alphas appear to he targeted then the dogs go quiet

Use a fan and earplugs.

Takes a couple of nights to get used to it and after that it's golden.

Stop complaining. You could be living in the Philippines where you'd have dogs barking AND chickens waking you up at 3:00 am.

Put food out for them but crush up some sleeping pills and mix it with the food. But don't tell anyone.

Encourage your neighbours to keep cockerals and they will help distract you from the dog barking. 😀

Yet another dog hater, and sad that you have brought up your child to also hate them. Either move into a big city condo, or move to another country.

Buy ear plugs – noise protection – or move; or just live with it, in time you might even get used to it...thumbsup

Ok so he wrote he 'hates' dogs - but thats probably dogs here because they are a often a pest, especially in packs - so like me, its probable that he hates the unnecessary noise and risks they present, and the absense of control in a lot of cases when authorities do nothing about the issue - so that breeds a certain form of intolerance which grows to hate.

I hate unnecessary noise and find dogs barking all the time to be extremely annoying - I don't hate dogs, but I hate unnecessary noise they make - in the city or the countryside.

I hate yapping noisy dogs in the UK too (which is an 'owner issue').

Meanwhile - my mate (in the UK) has an awesome dog (Lab) and we regularly go for walks when I visit the dog is not brilliantly trained, but it hardly makes a noise - barks once or twice when someone is at the door, thats about it.

Noisy dogs in Thailand are as annoying as cokfnuks revving their bikes and racing them at night.

As mentioned the best option is to neuter and spay the ones around. Unfortunately it will takes years to see the benefits.

I noticed also in Bangkok there are none to a lot less street dogs around.

Unfortunately every yaboo with a horn, wanna be racer, and drunk tourist stumbling in early in the morning will still wake you up.

Good. I think you will fit right in with the Chinese. How yapping dogs upset you, but Chinese who scream at the top of their lungs and who spit everywhere doesn't is the million baht question. I have security guards who blow their whistles from 8 Am until 7 PM. I am given to fantasies of where I would stick their whistles, but I deal with it. You are leaving in March. Less than 2 months to go. Suck it up buttercup. You will survive.

I didn't right I hate dogs. The context of my post was I hate dogs running loose and out of control at night.

I lived in BKK for a decade ... not one issue with dogs. Then ... Built a house in Isaan, and entered "Dog Hell" ... but nothing as bad as you describe. Well, that's not entirely true, the first year, there was a truly vicious dog capable of jumping over my wall and not shy about trying to bite me. I talked to the owner. They ignored me. But then, not sure why, the dog suddenly got sick, and died.

One of the "rules" i have learned traveling the globe is "Culture Always Wins" Don't even try and talk to Thai People about the dog issue, you may as well literally talk to a tree stump. Buy some high quality noise cancellation headphones, muddle through the next months, and take the lessons you have learned forward in life.

There’s a very easy two word solution for that: ear plugs.
