Got onto the BBC iPlayer last night and watched a 60s movie called, "Scott of the Antarctic" and I must've seen it all those years ago, but it was worth another look, with John Mills, Kenneth More and others in it.

At school we all learnt that Capt Scott was a hero (along with his team) and we never learned anything about Amundsen, sad to say.

They were brave men, with an ill-conceived expedition and the decision to take motorised sleighs and ponies along was a major part of their downfall, whereas the Norwegians had said that the reason they take dogs is because they are trustworthy, hardy, and could provide food if necessary.

The scenes of bitter cold took me back to my time in the North Sea, offshore Norway, when the temperature dropped so low that the sea spray froze on the side of the rig I was on, and if you grabbed hold of a safety railing without thinking, you froze to it momentarily. Nowhere near as cold as the Antarctic of course, but it was bitter.

Contrast this to the time I spent in the Sahara desert where the temperature regularly got to the mid 40° C, and 58° C was recorded in another part of the Sahara, so going from one extreme to the other.

Although Scott is considered a hero what did he actually achieve?

He failed to reach the pole and lost all his men in the process.

A real hero is Ernest Shackleton, who although did not reach the pole saved ALL his men during a two year epic journey to reach safety. :clap2:

I too prefer the dry heat of the Sahara to the damp cold of Northern Europe

A lot more than England's football team. They're considered hero's. Yeah right.

Agree, although the school teachings at the time (in my school anyway) paid homage to Scott, with little to no mention of Amundsen, so that's what "we" were brought up on.

Also agree on Shackleton and his exploits although I do think that the British like to "revel" in the "heroic defeats", i.e. The Charge of the Light Brigade.

Don't mind the damp cold of Northern Europe, but the freezing seawater temp in the north, North Sea, was tough and if it wasn't for the money I'd have been gone a lot sooner than I did!!

Yea!  We do seem to have the knack for that. Nothing too wrong with national pride but it does tend to distort history.

Slightly off topic.

I had the opportunity of working on the Channel Tunnel. This was at the start when they were having problems with water leaking and flooding and there was doubt that that it was even possible.

Didn't fancy working knee deep in freezing sea water, so opted for a nice warm job job in Southern Sahara.

Wish now I had taken the Channel job. They finished the tunnel and it became one of the wonders of the world. Regret now I wasn't part of it.

Life Huh!

And what did your school teach you about Tenzing Norgay..............That he just carried the bags-----????

You are a Kiwi --?--yes

I met Hillary In the 70s--he was touring holding meetings with the view of running against Muldoon, seemed a nice down to earth guy......

I was born in England and spent the first half of my life there before emigrating to NZ and becoming a citizen thereof, and don't remember learning anything about Hillary and Norgay back in my schooldays, however when I got to New Zealand he was part of NZ life, so hard to miss.

Not only that, Tenzing Norgay was also highly regarded, so I'm not sure where you're coming from with your comment?

Also, he was educated at Auckland Grammar School, which is where I coached one of their football teams as part of a SPARC NZ initiative, so he was "ever present" so to speak.

OK I should have picked that up as well.....................:coffee1:

Unfortunately that happens quite often because I use Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition software (because of a carpal tunnel problem) and it is forever playing tricks, occasionally freezing things up, and other times missing out complete sentences, so we don't have the best of relationships, Dragon and I.

I usually check what is posted, but obviously I missed this.

Jolt

Kate Beckinsale (nearly 50) playing a tough girl that should have a 20 something actress in the role. She was hot and naked age 18 in Haunted (30 years back).

Not watched it yet, trailer looks like John Wick with his Auntie playing his part.

Boys from County Hell (2020)

A recent movie that everyone missed, Vampire move set in some nice Irish countryside. I could only find it on YIFY, and it was well worth the watch.

Where can I find that?

I've long been a fan of the BBC's historical documentaries and the latest one that I've just started to watch is 'World War II: Behind Closed Doors'.

It reveals many of the secrets of the diplomatic maneuverings and shenanigans that went on between the Soviet Union, Germany, the UK and the USA during that war.

It promises to be a very interesting series. (if you like that sort of thing of course)
