Thailand's chief of police General Suwat "Big Pat" Chaengyodsuk fronted the lauching of a bold new vision for policing in Thailand, reported Daily News yesterday.

It's called the Samart Safetee Sone 4.0 in Thai or Smart Safety Zone 4.0 in English.

Suwat and many of his minions including Lt-Gen Surachate Hakparn - once chief of the Immigration Bureau before his fall from grace - were in attendance at a "virtual event".

Gone was that old fashioned notion of having cops on the beat. In was "AI" (artificial intelligence). A "people poll" had determined that this was what the public wanted.

Mini-me Suwat - bespectacled and with the crowd in the palm of his hand - stood on the stage to expound his philosophy of policing in the 4.0 era and there were more buzzwords than insignia.

Among the English terms were community policing, smart cities, solutions and concepts - he even managed to show in a reference to a sandbox.

As the appreciative audience of those from the state and private sector waited on his every word Suwat said that policing these days was so much more than just installing CCTV cameras.

You have to be smart, said the top cop who took up his role last September promising to revolutionize the force.

He outlined how CCTV, AI, SOS buttons and a 24 hour command center would pave the way for the future safety and security of all his Thai phee nong - brothers and sisters.

And that was not all - not by a long chalk.

There would be apps so people could report crime online.

These are called Police 4.0 and the wonderfully worded "POLICE I LERT U".

This is believed to be "alert" not "love" - that's a given.

All this tech would create a "Cyber Village" where the Thai people could feel warm and fuzzy in their feeling of complete safety.

And where the criminals would be quaking in their boots in fear of the smart police.

Responsible for guiding the 15 location pilot project before its success is evaluated and it is rolled out nationwide will be three top cops.

Surachate or Big Joke and generals Manu Mekmork and Piya Uthayo.

The project will start in Lumpini, Huay Kwang, Phasi Charoen and Pak Kret in the Thai capital Bangkok.

Simultaneously it will run in the provinces in Pattaya, Phuket, Samut Prakan, Udon Thani, Chiang Mai, Phitsanuloke, Rayong, Hat Yai, Ratchaburi and Prachinburi and Pak Chong.

ASEAN NOW wishes the project well. And hopes it will be more successful than the "Care Bears" initiative launched some years ago in Pattaya.

I feel it is going to take considerably more than some smooth words and dystopian dribble, before anyone is going to have the slightest faith in their honesty and ability to perform what their duties are supposed to involve.

Actions speak louder than words, but don't expect to see any of this anytime soon.

Not a word about corruption and plastic bags?
Was Joe Ferrari in the audience too, or could he watch the show from BKK Hilton?

So funny. It would be nice if these guys even knew what those terms meant.

And the biggest problem is the corruption. That will never go away.

Who is that minion on far left of the photograph? Standing at ease when the boss is at attention. Not so smart......

I've had "Police I Lert U" on my phone for years, never actually had to test it.

Why not test it? We await with bated breath.????

And on the electronic payment terminal handed by the policeman in order to pay fines by credit cards, there will be the following option:

- press green if you want to add a donation for the police officer

- press red if you want to get troubles!

????

Well personally I think that if BIG JOKE is in charge that it may have a chance.  Even if it helps a little at least they are trying.

It will be interesting to see how it works.  Hopefully it will help people and not become a joke because it is misused

Is it the solution no but it could help

No matter how much icing you apply to dog turd, it's still a turd.  It'll be the same with the BIB.  If their electronic system works as well as their 90 day reporting system, it will be a raging success by Thai standards,

Mind you, I don't mind the corruption per se.  At least it's in your face, you can negotiate, and even get away with it sometimes if you call their bluff and do enough wai's.

Back in the former New Zealand, now known as the People's Democratic Socialist Republic of Aotearoa,  the corruption is much more formalized, documented, and government sanctioned.  Everything short of farting in public will see you on the wrong end of the law. And copying the UK, they now have what they call "non-crime crimes" which is essentially "wrongthink".

And what country do you live in or come from.  There is not a city in the world that police do not have cameras and use AI for policing.

hah it's Aotearoa, and always was, and will always be, what kind of name is New Zealand anyway how is it even remotely like Holland? Ardern's the best thing to happen to the place since David Lange.

New broom same old carpet.

I think I will wait for the Police 6 app.

Give them a chance to iron out all the problems with Police 4 and Police 5.

When even the media make an open mockery of your latest vynl circle jerk, it's time to turn out the lights and just go home in tears, in the Lambo. The one matching "todays" birthday colour of course.
