drmal Posted May 6, 2022 Posted May 6, 2022 After almost 2 years, I returned, and found my favourite seafood-accompanying Thai beer - Chang is now lowered to 4.8% abv from 5%. I remember it was more than 6% long ago. Â It was already tasting watered down even at 5%, but now it's even lower. Â So having Sing Beer nowadays. Â Any thoughts on why it was lowered? 1 1 1
Popular Post Mac Mickmanus Posted May 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted May 6, 2022 Tappers 6.4 %Â 53 Baht from 7/11 6
Popular Post freedomnow Posted May 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted May 6, 2022 Why did they stop Chang Export...far better than Chang IMO...better than the lot of the domestic beers...crazy. 5 2

Mac Mickmanus Posted May 6, 2022 Posted May 6, 2022 1 hour ago, freedomnow said: Why did they stop Chang Export...far better than Chang IMO...better than the lot of the domestic beers...crazy. Because they began to regulate normal Chang beers and so Chang Export wasn't needed . Previously the alcohol content of Chang beer was unregulated and the alcohol content varied and so they couldn't export the beer .   They then invented Chang export which had a precise alcohol content and could be exported 1
Popular Post Jerno Posted May 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted May 6, 2022 Why? Very simple....it's more profitable for the brewery. Nothing more. 4 1
Popular Post Gottfrid Posted May 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted May 6, 2022 I can see the percent hunters are out again. Not happy with Chang, why not drink Lao Khao? I mean, if the percent makes it taste better, that must be heaven for a percent hunter. 6 2

Popular Post IAMHERE Posted May 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted May 6, 2022 Why? Very simple....it's Taxed on amount of alcohol, less alcohol less tax per bottle, price per bottle is less. Nothing more. 2 2

RichardColeman Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Since I only drink MY beer at 4.5% - and still add some ice or lime - I'm ok with a drop in alcohol levels. UK beer normally is only 4%. Anything over 4-4.5% to me takes like it has the consistency of syrup !  I hope poster is not the wasted guy I saw sitting outside the 7/11 the other day with a 'special brew' strength tin in his hand. 2

Popular Post Kenneth White Posted May 7, 2022 Popular Post Posted May 7, 2022 Its good to see there are some beer connoisseurs here in Thailand. ;-) 3
Andycoops Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 It was done to lower the tax, as alcohol is taxed by the percentage of alcohol content, the higher the content the more tax applied, Lao Khao excepted. It also therefore keeps the retail price lower.
scubascuba3 Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 4.8% seems to be popular, maybe it's a tax threshold, perhaps for exporting. Â I drink Tapper 6.5% at home, about 545 baht for 12 at Makro and BigC, Singh in bars

Tapper beer is 6.5% Only 51 baht a large can if you buy from Tops, Foodland etc. The best Thai beer for taste and value in Thailand IMO. I wonder how long they will be able to maintain the current price? Â
HappyExpat57 Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Why? It's ALWAYS about the ฿฿฿฿฿฿฿. 1
Burma Bill Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 10 hours ago, drmal said: Any thoughts on why it was lowered? Less alcohol duty to pay, increasing profit for the brewers??????  10 hours ago, drmal said: I remember it was more than 6% long ago. Yes indeed, when I retired to live in Thailand 22 years ago bottled Beer Chang was 6.4% but sometimes exceeded this (as I well remember!!) Quote from Goggle:  "The original version of Chang is an amber coloured lager beer made from malt, rice, hops, water and yeast. The combination of rice used in the brewing process and the stronger than average 6.4% alcohol content by volume can catch out unwitting tourists"

Iamfalang Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 I haven't drunk anything under 4.9% in over 45-years.   I don't trust elephants.  711 needs 7.11% case of 100 so I only have to visit once a day
