You're so American!

From my experience here:

Ask an American about British, they really have no opinion and don't care.

Ask a British about American and they will have mostly strong negative opinions and rants.

So, who is obsessed with who?

I'd still answer that I'm from Texas, mostly because if you grew up there, for some reason you generally identify with it more than saying generic 'American.'   Not a red or blue thing, I don't even vote any more.

One 'American' thing that is fading a LOT is saying how this or that isn't up to our standards.... back home it's like this.... you hear it less and less because unfortunately so many things back home are getting worse.   We still have better building codes, original ideas, our stock market is the center of the universe, and um... hmm, getting harder to come up with these...

But, but who doesn't care about their home country first?

I don't.   Still the Land of Opportunity (USA), and definitely enjoyed my birthright of being part of and taking advantage of it.  But I hold no respect for the govt and politicians, or policies.  USA not alone in that, as I don't think I like any country's politics or govt.

People themselves, are basically the same worldwide.  I see no difference what so ever between most nationalities.

The association of shouting, yelling and yawping to let everyone else know what a good time you claim to be having. Admittedly, this only seems to be those less than 40 years old.

I wish everyone would cut Americans a bit of slack.  They have a planet to run.

Loud.

whenever travelling anywhere in the world you can always hear them.

Its like they’re announcing that they are American to everybody.

I find the Dutch, Chinese, & Germans to be the loudest to be around....

Or even know where the UK is ????

This thread simply exposed more than a few Anti-Yank members, not that it was needed.  As it seems most of the vocal forum members lean that way.

Explains why the world is the way it is, and why many of us, avoid new 'friendships' with expats.

30 years ago when I was working on the passport control at Heathrow I noticed a tendency for American citizens to fill in the 'Nationality' line on the landing card with their genealogy - so there were sometimes some quite weird combinations like "Irish/Polish/Jewish". Quite a number put "Caucasian", and one of my colleagues used to amuse himself by asking "How are things in Caucasia at the moment?".

It was something peculiar to Americans. I never knew any other nationality that did the same.

From time to time when one of my limey friends was rattling on I would ask them "How many major newspapers this very day in England have an article about the United States above the fold"?  The answer is damn near every one.  How many newspapers in the US have an article about England anywhere on the front page?  Nary a one.

How can one even BE and American when the America one once knew has up and sailed away?

On the upside........

I find Americans (the ones not trying to shoot you) very polite and friendly.

On the downside............

they seem to think everyone within a 100m radius wants to hear what they have to say.

A thing about Americans is they clearly see themselves more at the centre of the universe and believe in their specialness - as such it seems like they are more likely to fall for ruses -there is much less likelihood an extreme politician, cult leader or religious leader, would succeed in Australia in the same way as they seem to be able to get a foothold in the States  - our down to earthness and BS meter is too strong to cop it.

Having said that there does seem to be something in the air in the states that garners success and achievement that you may be less likely to see elsewhere.

One last comment on the term septic tanks - I have never heard someone use that term in my life and it was probably last used in the 50's or 60's.

Yep.  That is why nowadays I only travel to visit geographic attractions.  I realised a good while back that regardless of cultural differences people are all the same, they are just trying to improve their living conditions the best way they can.

I think its more a UK term (being rhyming slang). I have heard most Aussies replace it with "seppo".

Being cockney rhyming slang, its not derogatory per se, just a side of dark British humour.

It's kind of hard to admit your American with Biden as President. I was at Central BKK and a German ask me where I was from, told him America, he told me Biden is an "EMBARRASSMENT!" Says it all.

yeah right...ask him how adolph worked out for him

Nah. That is guys from Toronto????

A dead give-away for me are guys wearing baseball caps, inside and outside, day and night. In the gym I attend there are Thais and foreigners from all over and the only ones wearing any headgear at all are the Americans.

Like if someone says California (I used to do that!) it's usually them trying to communicate that they're blue not red as if the foreigner cares about that code.

i always say california because when i answer USA or America, 90% of the time i'm then asked 'where in USA/America ?'  i'm not sure this blue/red thing was ever a reason for anyone, sounds strange to me.

Hard to believe.

That certainly is a quandary, being American and having a senile, old globalist, socialist, communist sympathizer for President. It certainly is an oxymoron, and I understand why so many Americans are having trouble identifying with their sex and just who they are.

Proudly German and will always be. Would never trade my Reisepass for that blue, eagle-crested thing. Not even if it came with financial and tax incentives.
