This tragic case raises and begs the question: how was he allowed to leave the United States? Travel into and out of that country is one of the planet's most tightly controlled and monitored movements. I thought passports were scanned well ahead of the flights and cross-checked with law enforcement databases.

Thai police are neither competent or incompetent, it is not a binary answer and there is a range.

 

On the whole though, I view them as being on the incompetent side of the scale. 

 

 

Sounds like this guy has serious anger management issues. A nice, long, cozy stay at a Thai prison might teach him to control these urges to kill people. Dispecable behavior!

For those who wonder how he made it into Thailand at all, it's not really that hard if you think about it.

A) He wasn't convicted of a crime that had a sentence of (more than 2 years in jail is it ?). So no restriction on getting a Visa (if he even bothered).

B) They don't do "criminal background checks" on people who arrive at Suvarnabhumi (or wherever) and get a 30 Day stamp.

C) As in the case of Michael Karas, all one has to do is "steal" some ID from someone who looks similar to you and that is usually enough to get you through most international border crossings. (So long as the person who's ID was "stolen" doesn't report it of course.)

D) However, he had a valid US Passport issued in 2017. Pleading guilty to a misdemeanour charge wouldn't be cause for a judge to confiscate someone's passport.

Note the report doesn't say if he was here on any kind of Visa. The house was rented - probably in her name, not his. 

Not sure what he was thinking by going to Chiang Mai. Maybe hoping no one would notice "another foreigner" or hoping that "they all look alike" and hoping to hide until things died down ?

I am surprised that they were able to track him down and arrest him so quickly all the same. Literally caught him within a day. (Maybe he did something stupid like rent a hotel room using his real name.)

So if the police can find the body (15 kms from the home) and arrest the suspect over 185 kms away in the next province within a day, I'd say they are pretty competent (at least when they want to be).

for 2500 USD you can renounce your citizenship.

Larry - a USA prison emergency response team leader - just told me that guys who kill pregnant women do not last long. If the Aryan Brotherhood gets hold of him - he will be killed. I assume that a similar fate awaits him in the Bangkok Hilton.

A Longmont man originally facing an attempted murder charge after police say a gun went off while he was threatening a woman with it has pleaded to a misdemeanor count after prosecutors said the named victim could not testify.


Jason Matthew Balzer, 31, on Friday pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree assault in Boulder District Court and was sentenced to two years of probation, according to court records.

Nothing to do with hatred of the country, just understanding the level of native criminality.  By the way it is more like $4800 now and you need a new citizenship first. Listen, there are two ways for Thailand to identify these lowlifes. Check their arrest records prior to entry (easy in the case of Americans), or let all and sundry in and wait for them to re-offend. Thus the tragic results. Thailands weak immigration procedures killed this woman, 100 percent.

A harmless retiree is subjected to tons of paperwork and heavy financial requirement to renew their visa and yet Thailand allow this type of murderer to get their marriage visa?

 

Apparently, Thailand didn't do a criminal check on him before granting the visa.

 

There’s no rehabilitating dog <deleted> like this he needs to be executed. The only good news here is he will most likely be murdered in prison while awaited trial once it’s discovered what he’s done.
