Popular Post Guderian Posted July 29, 2021 Popular Post Posted July 29, 2021 It’s being discussed on and off that if matters don’t improve then the government (i.e. Prayut as he seems to be the only one who matters) will consider imposing a Wuhan-style lockdown. In other words, everybody will have to stay at home 24 hours a day. Theoretically, the local authorities would provide food and water to every home, but I’m sure we can all see the weaknesses in that plan in a place like Pattaya with a large, unregistered foreign population and literally tens of thousands of empty houses and condos. I’m currently mulling over two options. The simplest but less pleasant one is simply to lay in large amounts of provisions over the coming weeks, enough food and water to keep me supplied for at least a month and preferably two. I’ve got a house with plenty of storage space, as well as three freezers and two fridges, so it’s feasible. As long as the internet stays up it would be doable, I could exercise in the garden, though it would be boring and frustrating. The second option is to get away from it all. In the extreme case that might mean flying back to Britain for the duration, and coming back to Thailand when they finally make it reasonably easy to do so. An alternative which would probably be easier and more pleasant, though, is to try and book a villa for a month somewhere that isn’t badly affected by the virus, like Koh Chang, or maybe even Samui or Phuket if they’ll allow people with just one jab to enter. The problem will be in reacting before they actually impose the Wuhan lockdown, I assume by then it would be too late to leave for friendlier shores. I gather that there’s another review of restrictions due in around a fortnight, if we’re up to 30,000 new cases a day by then, with maybe 2,000 of them in Chonburi, then it’s probably fait to say that the restrictions are going to get worse. Wuhan though, I’m not sure yet? What are your thoughts on the matter? Are we heading for a Wuhan-style period of total incarceration in our homes? And, if so, would you just put up with it or would you try and get away? 3 1
scubascuba3 Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Don't use it as an excuse to panic buy loads of junk food 2
digbeth Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 The moment they announce total lockdown with no chance out to buy foods, you'll see spikes in cases from people crowding in supermarkets panic buying for sure, with malls closed, supermarkets and makro are already crowded 2

Popular Post redwood1 Posted July 29, 2021 Popular Post Posted July 29, 2021 If there is a Wuhan lockdown, I would say that would call for a Keg party on the beach....No masks or social distancing required......Hey if the ship's going down, you might as well rearrange the deck chairs and have some fun..... 6 1 1
Popular Post internationalism Posted July 29, 2021 Popular Post Posted July 29, 2021 there won't be wuhan, that one was only there and nowhere else in the world. And for less than 1 month. Stay where you are, stock up. Get water filter instead of relying on bottles. Travelling, moving around, airports unnecessary expose you. Costs a lot of many and you won't be certain when you will be allowed to come back. You house might be exposed to brake in if nobody around for a long time. On top of food, do get some exercise equipment, it motivates you to move. Even better - dog companion for walks. For boredom online games or any other mental stimulation. If you live alone get female "thai language teacher" - that's mental and physical stimulation at the same time. 3

Nojohndoe Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Perhaps such a dramatic move could be initiated not so much by a response to covid-19 but by the increasing level of political objections being voiced and encouraged? 1 1
Popular Post Peterw42 Posted July 30, 2021 Popular Post Posted July 30, 2021 (edited) I dont know that anyone, government or otherwise, has suggested there will/may be a Wuhan locked in your house type lockdown. To say it may happen is wild speculation and misinformation. At the moment, half the population still goes off to a place of work each day, factories, mom and pop shops, banks etc. The next level of lockdown may see these people staying home, but places selling food and groceries would be open. Its a big leap from further lockdowns to being locked in our houses. Great topic to kick off panic buying, civil unrest etc. Edited July 30, 2021 by Peterw42 5

wmlc Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 In Wigan a designated person in each household was allowed to go out 2-3 times per week shopping for essential food and so forth. No one in the Thai government will be supplying you with food. 2

I saw scenes like that in Makro yesterday, as well as the "non-essential" stuff like office goods being covered up in tarpaulins again. The Thais are sometimes just being opportunitic, though, now that Prayut has floated the idea of a Wuhan-style lockdown several times perhaps they're just investing in bulk-buying stuff they'll eventually use anyway, but can sell at a nice profit if the worst does happen. It makes me think of the day when the booze ban ended last year, nobody was sure if itw ould last for just a day or two, or much longer. Thais who'd made a killing selling beer on the quiet during the ban were driving off from Makro with pallets of Leo, even though, as it happened, the ban was never reimposed. 2 1

Katipo Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 There will not be a Wuhan style lockdown. The areas hardest hit right now include those with all the major industrial estates. The country, and the companies in these areas, simply can't afford to be shut down. Some of the mega factories employ over 10,000 people each. As OP states, the GOV is not competent enough to provide the basic essential services, so as mentally challenged as they are, they aren't quite deluded enough to think they could provide food and water to 70m people. The current measures (perhaps a little more), and the common sense of the Thai people are about as much as can be managed right now. 1
Caldera Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 It's an unlikely scenario, if only because the government cannot be bothered to organize supplying each household with essentials for the duration. They could have a slightly different model that still allows you to go out for shopping on certain days only, based on your birthday or ID number (as seen in other countries). I think they would also keep the delivery services up and running, so for me, the main reason to go out on a daily basis is to get some fresh air, sunshine and exercise - all of that is very important to stay healthy. 1
