Thailand well on the way to vaccinating 70% of population - vaccine in every province, says Anutin

Thailand's health minister and DPM Anutin Charnvirakul was upbeat in a visit to Thanyaburi Hospital in Rangsit north of the Thai capital Bangkok yesterday.

 

The embattled minister came bearing gifts - 10,000 doses of Sinovac and Pfizer vaccines - the former for the local authority, the latter for the hospital itself. 

 

They are intended for frontline medical staff reported INN. 

 

Anutin claimed that Thailand was well on the way to the target of achieving 70% of the population vaccinated and further asserted that every province now has vaccine. 

 

He said that he was spending his time making sure that everyone got a jab and ensuring the sick were looked after. 

 

INN made absolutely no attempt to fact-check these claims, notes ASEAN NOW. 

 

Latest figures show that only a small proportion of Thais - mostly in the medical profession - have received two jabs and numbers of one jabbed people remain low, mostly the elderly, people with underlying health problems and pregnant women.

 

Anutin's claims can be treated with a degree of skepticism, if not outright fake news, suggests ASEAN NOW who note many reports of unavailability of vaccine in the provinces according to many posts on its forums.

Well Anutin ! Your time is a complete waste of time, as you seem incapable of these tasks assigned to you as then Health Minister. You are just not delivering on your remit.

Time for you to take a vocational change, and maybe find some employment that you will be capable of doing well.

since March, so in 5 months, 22% had the first shot and 6% had the second shot. Only 19%, of the total 100mln planned this year.

There is no chance that within the next 5 month minimum 70% can be fully vaccinated.

There is shortage of the AZ from the start, only half of projected monthly allowance will be delivered.

Sinovac is ineffective for delta.

The mRNA were ordered just 2 weeks ago and waiting time is well over for the next year.

 

With new mutations arriving, those already vaccinated will need the booster within 6 months, i.e. already this year

A reasonable program ( various vaccination centres ) and vaccines available across all of Thailand should be what he is aiming for, the overcrowding at Bang Sue did more harm than good, despite the camera angle ????

Not wanting to defend this guy but I do like a correct and fair translation. The linked Thai news article says:

and
>Vaccines will be distributed to all provinces during this period (Aug. onward)<

Yes, but what is the time frame ?

8 months since having a vaccine and 5 % of the population vaccinated , at this rate it will take about ten years to reach the 70 % vaccinated figure

The vaccination is going to have to be a lot greater than 70% to significantly slow the spread of the Delta variety.   The % who need to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity increases greatly with the transmissibility of the disease.  The original virus had an Ro of under 3.  The Alpha variant had a transmission level of 4-5 and the Delta is as high as 8 or 9.   As the transmission rate increases, the Ro, then the number of people requiring vaccine begins to rise to achieve herd immunity.   

Thailand is quite far behind the curve.  They are using vaccines which are not particularly effective against Delta and the numbers of fully vaccinated people isn't high enough to significantly slow the spread.   Even the top rated vaccines, which do reasonably well against the Delta, are showing some vulnerability to breakthrough cases.

There is no time frame just sometime August onward. Fairly typical statement here and its correct that sometime after August 2021 there will likely be 70% vaccination achieved. He could have just said sometime after tomorrow and would have been correct as well.

The answer is honesty and clarity and a plan to get the best vaccines for the people and quickly, and none of these have been a factor in the BS coming from the mouths of the toy soldiers.
