dlclark97 Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 Just a guess but I don't think tourism will substantially recover until many restrictions/laws are changed or done away with. Tourists want a destination that is more enjoyable and more entertaining than their homes. They already have their upscale shopping malls so why spend a lot of money to go see another countries malls that possibly offer higher prices for similar goods they could buy at home. The super rich tourists expected, have most likely worked, saved and invested to become that way. They are smart with their money. They will not put up with some insurance requirements needed to come to visit or live in Thailand. For an older person the Thai companies 40,000/400,000 plan could cost well over 200,000 baht a year and there would most likely be exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Why would anyone already with an international insurance company that covers accident or illness in Thailand even consider that? 1
Popular Post Concerned observer Posted November 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted November 19, 2021 Who do we believe Thanet Supharothatrangsi (and all his members) who actually rely on tourists for a living, to employ their staff, satisfy their shareholders, etc. or Yutthasak Suphasorn of the TAT who has made so many false claims over the last 2 years and relies on his BS and lies being believed to keep his job? Isn't about time that Thailand slimmed down TAT from its 2,000 plus staff worldwide in tune with all the tour operators, hotels, tourist companies, massage shops, retailers, etc., that are their members and pay their wages through membership fees? There aren't any tourists coming - yet they all seem to hold on to their gravy train, overpaid jobs - despite not delivering? 5

Other airlines wanted to get into Krabi and Samui as well. All this optimism led him to believe that the future was rosy. November would see 100,000 foreign arrivals, he noted. But next month through to March there would be 300,000 foreign tourists a month. Then he went into an almost misty eyed reverie about auspicious signs, notes ASEAN NOW. "The early arrival of the cool season bodes well for the future of tourism," he claimed. Then came further predictions: 2022 - The total spending on domestic and foreign tourism would be 1.5 TRILLION baht or 50% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This man has been inhaling the dentists nitrous oxide it would appear. I just finished reading a story on AirAisia laying off folks and canceling flights as the new tourism is anything but far from rosy. When will these asshats look at the reality of things. 1 3

GrandPapillon Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 again they are assuming 2022 will be back to normal, but it won't ???? and with Thailand creating silly over-reacting policies, we can expect another full lockdown in 2022 with no tourists ????

Popular Post alphonse Posted November 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted November 19, 2021 The Minister for Non-Tourism. In the twenty odd years that I have been spending 3-4 months in what used to qualify as the "Land of Smiles" Thailand has turned FULL circle. Initially I came for a bit of work, now I'm a sun seeking tourist who is not particularly hard up. Not particularly into sleeze (a bit) and not a drunkard of more than moderate+ levels. I remember the Baht in the 90s for £1 and the cost of a bottle of Singha usually around 60-65 in most bars. I couldn't quite believe it! Gradually, and for various reasons, exchange rates didn't just become less favourable they were turned on their head. It was all still acceptable though (just) until airport taxi drivers started blatantly asking, "How much you give me?" with the meter off. Dual pricing and rip-offs became more rife, and you had to watch your 'bin' because the 'chit' was often exaggerated. I could go on. No room on this forum. Then we had the military, police rip-offs of tourist in the street (ciggy-butt police) and more and more restrictions which meant you could no longer, for example, watch the sunrise beside a Sukhumvit caravan bar after a few hours of gentle sipping and marvellous company. The Land of Smiles became the Land of the Puritans. Now, whilst all around them open up they are still on the make, delude themselves that they are a special case and still think that it is they doing the customer (tourist) a favour rather than the other way around. The penny will not drop. Times have changed forever. 7

All of the reporting and methodology of data collection has been garbage for decades. Lots of activities horrible (TAT website) or nonexistent (CRM). The highest of emotions is a bouquet of flowers for every millionth visitor at the airport. Even too lazy to evaluate the back of the TM 6 cards (which also needs a lot of improvement). They collect the email addresses like stupid, but don't do anything with them. The last lowlight was the commercial with Prayut as the main actor. As a marketing specialist, you can only throw up. Useless, the whole lot. 1

But they are not officially open and allowed to serve beer or wine or God forbid a 'G n T' I want to visit a proper restaurant and enjoy a decent meal with my mrs, and not looking over my shoulder for plod approaching looking for big handouts ( as my dodgy knees won't allow me to do a runner anymore ????). We used to eat out 3 or 4 times a week, at proper restaurants not beer bars masquerading as restaurants with difficulty making a toasted sandwich and serving beer in a T or coffee mug. Not a criticism of your post but the truth of the situation. As for STD's, I'll take your word on that. ☺????????????
ThaiFelix Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 Apart from everything else you have to take into consideration that Thais believe that every farang has a money tree in their backyards, that there are no poor farang. All those tens of thousands or more of farang who have been out of work since this pandemic started have just had more time to harvest 1,000 baht notes from their money trees and now can have a nice holiday in Thailand. 2
