Where do these Russian refugees get the money to stay indefinitely in a foreign country

How can these Russians be refugees? They are either draft dodgers , criminals or Russian Mafia. They do not meet the criteria for "refugees"   https://www.unhcr.org/en-ie/what-is-a

Lost in translation. Just another example of Thais misusing English words that they don't really understand.

Not looking good is it......reality is not one bullet has been fired on Russian soil, so all they are avoiding is conscription. Not the usual reason to try and claim asylum.

The Myanmar people have a better claim especially the Ethnic groups like the Karen and Rohynga, but Russian folks leaving to avoid being sent to wartime positions, that's a new one on me, it's not ethnic cleansing that's occurring in Russia now is it.

I've heard their taxi businesses are thriving with their visa exempt status...........????

It would have been better had they remained in their country and taken to the streets and protested against the invasion. They are fleeing the scene.

You joined this forum nearly four years ago, so I assume that whilst you could be Russian, you're probably not an actual refugee.

Also the Uyghurs should qualify for refugee status more than Russians, but they dont have the money,

Hope Thailand doesn't run out of Air freshener.

Easy to say when you wouldn't have to suffer the consequences.

A good part might be relatives and friends of oligarchs and other powerful figures in Russia, to some degree supporting the regime or tolerating it. I could accept them only if they are truly dissidents. Otherwise I would not call them refugees.

I sincerely doubt that any of these are in fear of being drafted to fight (and die) in Ukraine.  Residents of Moscow & St. Petersburg somehow aren't getting draft notifications.  Only the minority populations in far-away republics & oblasts are getting selected.

Besides, friends, relatives of Oligarchs, and powerful figures wouldn't have to sneak to Thailand and hang-out on public beaches.

"Connected" Russians live in London, party in Berlin and  access private beaches in Monaco.

Need to start somewhere-sometime to break free of their unfortunate population propaganda poisoning.........

I think you are right there is this Mr Pootin doing his own ethnic cleansing? When you watch the video's with POW's in Ukraine you can see they are very different to the Russians here in Phuket,

Russians aren't refugees. No one is invading Russia and displacing them. They left on their on accord to avoid getting drafted into the war effort. Any Ukrainians coming would be refugees but not Russians

Refugees ,My Foot.

Refugees don't have the Luxury to flee the country by plain and go on holiday.

It's more off an invasion of people that don't want to be in SSSR for a while or be unsavory individuals.

  • Popular Post

While I can understand Russian men wanting to avoid conscription. The term refugee is a bit strong. Russia is not at war, but engaging in a 'Special Military Operation.'

So many coming that they have pushed property rental rates up 300% in Phuket? And now own a large portion of the condo market there? The same in other tourist centres.

They don't sound like refugees to me. Not even economic migrants.

Well off expats is perhaps more accurate.

And let's face it. Thailand isn't doing this out of the goodness of their heart. This is a money boost.

Welcomed until they run out of money. :jap:

My question would be, how do Russian people really view the conflict?

Like he said the society is very divided (based on my perception, I am not Russian). You can wqtch YouTube channel 1402 to get some idea. Many famous Russian Youtubers have fled the country and are showing how ridiculous their government is.

I am not going for whataboutism but how did American people view the Iraq war in the early 2000's? There are always people supporting and opposing any war.

They didn't risk being jailed for openly opposing the war, unlike the Russians.

Surprise: They work online. A lot of them are actually working for their regular Russian employers. During the pandemic online work became the norm.

I would say the usual poorly written Thai article, they not refugees. Some are genuine tourists and some are avoiding the conflict or maybe a bit of both, also some actually work in various industries. Who can blame them for not wanting to be part of the war and right now its cold in Russia and life is tough so if they can afford it why not come to sunny Thailand. Some are very nice people and others are undesirables!

There is a condo project near me and I was visiting a friend the other day around lunch time, as I was waiting in the lobby area it looked like little Moscow and they are not refugees, To well dressed, and it's not cheap renting these condo's,

If they are here to avoid the draft and oppose what Putin is doing in Ukraine then I welcome them.

If they are here to avoid the draft and support what Putin is doing in Ukraine, then I feel they should nr put on the first flight to Kyiv.

  • Popular Post

The OP article is missing much of the text so what is presented makes no sense. What pact does it refer to?

  • Popular Post

Refugees buying up condos. Tis a strange world we live in.

  • Popular Post

I don't blame them for escaping conscription and Putin's war in Ukraine,  but I hope they are not linked to crime or turn to it to support themselves financially. But they are NOT refugees, the Ukrainians are.

Will they be given refugee privileges?

Thai nationality, PR etc.

That would upset a few on here, might be a need for an "outraged" emoji

Yes, that would give the moaners and complainers something to moan and complain about.
