BANGKOK, June 11 (TNA) – The ambassadors of Belgium and France asked the Thai government to arrange for COVID-19 vaccinations for their citizens.

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Belgian ambassador Sibille de Cartier d’Yves asked the government to speed up COVID-19 vaccinations for Belgians in Thailand including those living on Phuket and Samui islands. Most Belgians in Thailand were members of the Social Security Fund and the Public Health Ministry would meet the request, Mr Anutin said.

Besides, he said new French ambassador Thierry Mathou met him and asked the Public Health Ministry to permit the import of 10,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine for inoculation with the French people who lived in Thailand. The lot was expected to arrive in late June, Mr Anutin said.

french ambassador begged for 10k of J&J to be imported for those over 45.

Might be coming shortly.

It might be coming shortly, probably will be distributed by the government hospitals for a fee.

That's the direction.

What Anutin promissed to belgian ambassador is just diplomatic for f.off. Completely meaningless, as SSF is delaying vax program for immigrant workers, just today they said till September

An interesting qualifier.

Not sure what to make of this. Some Belgians are more equal than others I guess.

I appreciate we have moved away for whatever reason but most have earned and payed for the right to assistance in a once in lifetime event.

In the case of the U.S. I would expect that Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman shoveled the path for follow-on discussions during her meeting with payut a few weeks ago?

From the statement:

The Deputy Secretary reiterated the U.S. commitment to the people of Thailand in our fight against COVID-19, which includes $30 million in COVID-related assistance to Thailand. The two sides agreed on the importance of continuing to work together to combat COVID-19.

Would be interesting to track those 10,000 units to see if in fact they end up in the arms of Belgians.

Especially interesting considering that they are being supplied by the French government.

Anutin would make best comedy show host. His lines would not even Need to be scripted.

how on earth does he know that most Belgians are in SS fund?

if asked what language Belgian speak, his reply would most likely be chocolate

Just a refresher.  We've been discussing to death Americans wanting their country to help them be vaccinated in Thailand, as China has done.  All sorts of reasons given as to why that would be a bad idea.  One that stood out was that it would be deeply offensive to Thailand and provoke hurt feelings--never mind that China has already done it.  I remember posting a suggestion that the US donate 5 or 10 million doses with the stipulation that a portion is set aside to vaccinate Americans--thus softening the supposed blow to Thailand's pride.

Now we have France getting approval to send 10,000 vaccines for its citizens over 45 years of age living in Thailand.  Nothing mentioned of sending any vaccines to help Thais, just a shipment only for French citizens.  Anutin readily agreed to allow this with no fuss that I can see..  So, I'm wondering where is the supposed hurt feelings from Thailand at being so deeply offended by a country sending vaccines for its citizens.  Seems to be accepted pretty easily and likely the only hurt feelings will be from citizens from other countries who have been left stranded by their governments.

About time all ambassadors put pressure on Prayut and Anutin to sort out the shambles.

Who should import it and at who's cost?

Private hospitals and at cost to person's that receive jab.

That would be ideal, better than waiting for the embassy's of home countries to cover the costs.....surely be a long wait that way!

And some people wonder why most people in the world dislike the French, lol!

Fair enough, we Thais already have vaccines and will have everyone done in a few months.

Very true. One of the few embassies that could do with shuttle from main gate to front door.
