Twenty percent of donated Pfizer vaccines from US must go to foreigners living in Thailand, says CCSA general

Featured Replies

Yup. This is what has everyone miffed about the US Embassy's response, "we simply can't supply vaccines to our citizens around the world", while there are millions of donations coming.

This is going to do wonders for our image..........I imagine many Thai's will be rejoicing at the news we will get 20% of 'their' vaccines.

Toughtittie.

They wouldn't have got the other 80% if it weren't for the US' generosity, which given Thailand's sucking up to China all the time, was extremely magnanimous.

In the unlikely event Thailand ever donates anything to countries poorer than itself, they can call the shots.

US taxpayers paid for this. Once again, foreign aid = poor people in rich countries donating to rich people in poor countries.

So where do US expats start bidding for a jab?

Its a token gesture, you have an abundance of vaccines since April, so much so they are encouraging vaccine tourism and dishing them out at airport arrivals.  Worry about the tax breaks as cities fight over tech/startup/tesla-like companies rather than avg $17/pp vaccines, vaccinne tourism and donations are probably less than $1million a day.

Agreed.

All Thai immigrants in the U.S. (legal and illegal) can get free vaccinations.

Many (hundreds? thousands?) Thais have traveled to the U.S on tourist visas and gotten free vaccinations.

OK, so we're donating 1.2 MM doses. If you don't want them tell us. And we will stop any future donations.

Otherwise sit down and shut up.

Hundreds? Thousands? think bigger, Lets say 100,000 , of the most expensive double $26x2 dose moderna to make you feel better, what's that 5.2million dollars, your local mcdonalds probably got a bigger tax break to refurbish their gardens.

And paid Thai hospitals to administer the shots.

China also donated a tranche or three of Sinovac, with the stipulation that all their citizens here got vaccinated.

The irony is they will have minimal protection now, due to the Delta variant beginning to dominate.

I don't have an abundance of any vaccine. I am British living in Bangkok and was very lucky to get an AZ shot last week. The USA on the other hand have plenty of vaccines because their government procured them correctly. Also USA companies developed them.

Unlike the Thai government that used the crisis to try and enrich some already incredibly wealthy Thai families even further. I don't recall Thailand adding much to the development of the vaccines either.

So they can take what they have been given, say Thankyou, and then shut up.

This is guaranteed to get corrupted in some way and end up either missing or something. If it was to be done properly , it should be given to embassies to give to its citizens who register but watch this space and I am certain more than half of our gift will never make it

I was being deliberately conservative, on the Thai tourist volumes.

Immigrants (legal and illegal), yeah, 100,000 seems reasonable.

What he actually means is that they will use use the Pfizer on Thais and stick a Pfizer label on the unused  Sinovac vials.

None. Why?

Because the millions of vaccines exported from India to the richest countries in the world completely disproves the rhetoric. Thailand is a developing country that as yet hasn't seen one misely shot from the developed world and millions from China albeit its usefulness is in question against Delta.

Gates is full of $£€$. It is all about money.

Thailand had the opportunity to join the Covax program, but turned it down.

I believe Japan donated 1 million AZ, so there’s that.

And Thailand did opt out of covax, another annoying fact.

France sent doses of Jansson for its own nationals in Thailand.

and Thailand has only been open about having a Covid problem since, say, June.

the link between Thailand’s situation and Bill Gates a US billionaire seems, mmmmm,

Japan an Asian counrty is not in the reckoning. Thailand and Covax while annoying to you is irrelevant and France looking after it's own just about underlines the point.

A Big Pharma supporter but what was that about Indian Pfizer manufacture and export? Oh nothing. Mmmmmm.

Boo hoo. What were you expecting? The USA to pay off Thailand's shortfall in tourism revenue?

Stop holding your hand out for charity and then complaining it wasn't enough. A simple thankyou would suffice. It's more than Thailand has done for anyone else.

How's that relevant to the money grabbing big Pharma dividend kill? Taxpayers fund the research while shareholders reap the rewards. Like I said BIGGER PICTURE.

According to the U.S. Census, there are currently 300,319 Thai people living in the United States today, with an error margin of +/- 14,326. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_Americans

You appear to have forgotten what you posted, so let me remind you;

“None. Why?

notice those underlined words. Japan is indeed in Asia, but is also a developed country. Unfortunately for you, you did not say “non Asian developed country”. So Japan is “in the reckoning”.

had Thailand opted to be in Covax, it would have received vaccines from developed nations as part of that program. It opted out. So that fact is annoying in the sense that it makes the intent of your statement (sic that Thailand is a poor country neglected by developing countries), simply nonsense. And totally relevant.

French nationals located in Thailand received vaccines and so Thailand did not have to provide them. Tantamount to France giving vaccines to Thai people.

I see you have failed to provide any linkage to Bill Gates, but introduced some deflection about my being a big pharma supporter. Pointless narrative.

summery? Your statement that Thailand “hasn’t yet received one miserly shot from the developed world” is utterly untrue.

best just admit it, or keep quiet.

Yeah, again I was referring to immigrants, legal and illegal, who are not yet citizens.

But the nitpicking detail hardly matters when the topic is that Thais in the U.S. get vaccinations.

Gotta say, don't have high hopes for the U.S. Embassy doing much to ensure the set-aside portion ends up being used as promised.... And even less confidence in the Thai government following thru on its promise to actually use the set-aside as required -- especially if the administration is left in their hands...

All part of G7 agreement. If you were watching Covid announcements UK, France, Germany Japan, Italy, Canada, USA all making donations to buy vaccine or contributing vaccine.

Announcement to me seems unfair to USA, making them out to be mean when the intent is to make sure that refugees like Rohingya and others from Myanmar can be protected. It is not about giving vaccines to US nationals, even though  this is how they will get the vaccine to the US nationals. USA had tried several times to get vaccine to its people in Thailand. While everyone was  dumping on the USA government, USA had to wait for Pfizer to be approved and had to be sure that if it gave vaccine it would not be diverted. This is the same concern UK have with many countries.

Agreed. I peg my chances at or below 5%.

Much will fall off the truck. Then the registration process for foreigners will feature a website in the ancient Lanna language.

They would have to relocate a lot of it.......but not a bad idea......and it may well be a requirement for continued EU membership.

20% of Pfizer being donated to Thailand should go to ALL foreigners. All 1.5 million should go to us. Besides that Thailand has supposedly ordered 20K doses of Pfizer but that's what we heard about Moderna. Until Moderna told us Thailand never placed a order. Don't be surprised if the 1.5 million of Pfizer goes to Thais along with the 20 million if it ever comes

Yes, easy to fill the quota of non-Thais:

1. Burmese, etc, factory workers, and

2. Thailand's stateless residents
