Give you a mild hint, 6,900 baht a KG - or potentially 40% of a Thai income for a KG of meat !   Come to Macro - the cheap meat section is always packed !

Probably the same reason the meat fridges are not busy in Australia right now. Price of meat is currently ridiculous

Many common Thais find 400 Baht for a kg of freshly slaughtered beef tenderloin unaffordable.

But I think the pictures answer a rhetorical question.

How many buyers will go for Spanish smoked pata negra ham for 9000 to 16000 Baht/kilo to be seen at TOPS in Central Beach rd.?

How many will buy a small flask of "handmade" Italian olive oil for 11000 Baht?

(seen many years ago at Bangkok Siam paragon basement)

It's called Makro, Most of Big C meat prices ( and some others) are 'you're dreaming mate' prices, so yeah Makro is the place to go and do big shopping.

And so you have to search a bit more. I now buy my ham and bacon at a small wholesaler. Good quality and way cheaper. So its there.

MAKRO: have a look at the freezer and don't be surprised if they offer similarly expensive steaks from US, Australia, NZ on offer. Wagyu!

Of course the fresh meat is way less expensive. You just have to know what it is good for.

I wonder what they do with it? You never see meat on sale near its sell by date. The Soi dogs must dine well.

The meat counter at big C is a private company, they also run the cheese counter and the ready made food opposite the meat counter.

Prices doubled since they took over the business from Big C, and they are never busy, so I wonder how they can stay in business.

But many imported goods at Big C are now ridiculous priced.

Creamy cheese with herbs from Casino, was 110 baht before covid, now 330 baht for 125 gram. I had a friend bring me the same thing from Europe, at 70 Euro cents (25 baht) for 150 gram.

Chorizo salami sliced, 1800 - 2200 baht/kg, in Europe 14 Euro/kg for the same thing.

One kg of cherries inclusive plastic box inside curved is more expensive than 1kg of a sirloin steak.

Big C made the mistake to go from trays of fresh meat out for the public to choose from to prewrapped portions in glass cases... I for one quit shopping there in favor of the open markets...

Where do you think their meat comes from?

How many hours each week do spend there counting the customers and noting what they buy to rationally make that claim... five minutes, perhaps, when you walk past?

Perhaps it is sold; you're assuming that the OP's claim is correct (after he does nothing more than walking past the counter once a week doing his 5 minute "survey")!

Interesting background.

Gives me an idea why BigC extra has lost a lot of it's  attraction for me when in Pattaya.

Cheese: they only offer super expensive brand name products. Swiss Gruyere for 3000+ which you get at half the price at Friendship.

Casino cheese price hikes stunning. Up here most has vanished from the shelves. Too few millionaires here ????

The last time I was in Big C getting served my weekly quota of sausages a Thai lady spoke to the assistant that was serving me and he immediately started to serve her, so at this stage I left the counter only to find he's following me around the aisles with a couple of kilos of sausages, at which stage I told him I don't want them anymore, I'm sure it still hasn't clicked with him why I snubbed his sausages.????????????

Just been in a Big C extra, mrs refused to buy papaya at 49 baht as over priced, but did get discounted pork, then complained it was very expensive, I don't eat the muck.

I have noticed that the price of meat has gone up quite considerably, however as I am  not a big meat eater, it really doesn't bother me, and if I do want a good steak or similar, then I will go to a restaurant!

Whenever I do buy meat, it is usually something like cheek, hock or similar that is particularly good for slow cooking in the beef bourguignon I make, and that's not expensive. Very occasionally I buy some ground beef to make a chilli con carne, and because I slow cook that, it can be local Thai beef, and the end result is just the same as if using ground Aussie beef.

In actual fact, I have noticed the prices of food in general here, especially in the likes of Big C and Tops have gone up quite markedly, and that's just a sign of the times.

Someone mentioned cheese, and I am quite partial to Stilton, and occasionally bought it, however went off it a while back, and when I looked yesterday in Big C, the smallest almost thumb -sized slice of Stilton was 270 baht, and I would buy it if I wanted to, but am not bothered these days.

I imagine it could be hard for farangs here living purely on a pension, however there are plenty of Thai options and quite delicious Thai dishes which are very cheap and easy to cook, which I occasionally do, so switching meals and tastes is a good option in Thailand.

I used to buy steaks at big C.  Then I found a better source for better beef at less than half the cost.

I buy my New Zealand grass fed Rib-Eye & Striploin from Lotus, usually around 149 baht for 160 grams & 180gms, cooked more on the rare side, they are excellent value, but if you overcook them, they will be very chewy.

Thailand is not the right place for you if you need big box store grocery shopping with the full shopping carts and you’re cooking meals. It’s too expensive for the ingredients and not worth it.

I am from the USA and used to live that way. It’s different here.
