The world is changing, and it is forcing governments, corporations, and the citizens of the globe rethink how to exist.

Silicon Valley has changed how we control our day-to-day being, and conservationists are also demanding us to take care of the planet too.

So, are we and the citizens of Thailand going to be ready, or will the country be left behind?

In a recent interview looking ahead to the next decade, Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, governor of the Bank of Thailand thought the world will be defined by two major trends: sustainability and technology.

It is of course no secret that Bangkok’s future is at risk with rising sea levels, so something needs to be done soon to protect the city, otherwise like Jakarta, the capital may have to move to higher ground.

"Digital technology will be the other transformative force going forward. More efficient computers have allowed us to collect and make use of a quantity of data that was previously unimaginable," Suthiwartnarueput said.

Companies and governments all over the world are already finding ways to integrate technology into their products, not only to increase efficiency but also to improve the experiences and lives of the public.

So, if these predictions come true, what will life be like in 10 years?

The workforce of the future will be more flexible with certain services and companies finding their skilled staff will never need to enter an office again.

Where we work will be relevant.

So, it is likely that large resorts that are standing empty, may change from attracting short-stay tourists into becoming attractive to families whose parents prefer to work online.

Working besides the beach has to be preferred to being cooped up in a city condominium.

Mass tourism will give way to small groups of eco-conscious travelers, and national park regulations will be updated with sustainability in mind.

Along with the service sector, agriculture and manufacturing will experience a major shift as well. 

“Consumers' growing concerns about sustainability and health has led to green product categories that are able to command higher prices,” Suthiwartnarueput said.

Thailand’s traditions are wonderful; however, the country needs to try to find a balance between tradition and a digital future if it is to survive over the next 10-30 years.

But then Thailand would have to change its attitude towards farang expertise.

Thailand wasn't ready for the last generation

The big question is 'is the government ready for the next generation?

Will the walls be high enough and will they have enough armored vehicles?

I guess time will tell but at some point the young people will

have had enough and (force fully) will demand long over due changes.

I can not say i blame them.

 

555 Thailand hasn't been ready for any generation...so much as for the next! 

As long as education is only meant to produce some substandard robots, I fear the worst.

The future of Thailand will be defined by a it's ability to grow it's own food and generate it's own power. Along with it's ability to defend itself from foreign takeover (internally or externally).

 

In many ways, Thailand is far in advance of many western countries on all those issues.

I don't see what they have done to attract anyone with future forward thinking.

Actually, some of the spokes people who make presentations at the government meetings seem sharp.  Younger, good English and educated they should be the ones creating ideas and making decisions, but seems doubtful they have any influence.

Considering the current generation cannot make up their minds if they are a He, a She, an It, a Them or a We, I think its a case of the next generation not being ready for anything vaguely connected with reality yet anyway

Thailand is going to work together with NL. 

And climate change is not a hoax, whether man-made or not.

Don't underestimate the West.

 

Our economies may be struggling and we may depend on others for food, power and goods. But we've got the Pronouns for every situation. We've got BLM. We've got identity politics and we've got politicians who cannot define what a woman is. A heady mix to take us forward.

The problem is that many ordinary people are not able to see further than the most simpilistic statements, such as:

 

"climate always "changes" over the whole existence of this planet"

 

A few of them have got as far as:

 

"Acording to their intensity and extent they can be extinction events"

 

What they can't seem to grasp is:

 

"Human intervention can accellerate climate change, and has been shown to do so in the past"

 

"The greater acceleration and intensity of the intervention, during the era of modern Industrial development, has resulted in (previously unseen and on a geological scale) faster rates and extent of change"

 

"Human intervention can reduce change rates that human intervention has increased"

 

Simple truth is that ordinary people don't like the idea of abandoning the lifestyles (the intervention) that have brought about the rapid changes.

 

So now they deny that "science", which is, esentially, what created the modern world and those lifestyles, is telling the truth...........the truth being that most likely an extinction event is being provoked.

 

It's telling them something that they don't want to hear.

 

So now, after all those years telling them "how things work", It's lying to them.

 

Ordinary people think it's a "conspiracy"........or a "hoax".

 

All because they, in their most primitive, basic form, have an emotional connection to their IC car

 

That's ordinary people for you.

Nah, people want to get back to normal as quickly as possible.  Most people hate working remotely and want to get back to the office.  It just works better for everyone.

 

Also, hardly anyone really cares about sustainability or eco-blah-blah enough to actually change anything about their holidays.

 

Even the advent of the internet, which has changed so much about our lives, holidays have remained relatively unchanged.  Go somewhere nice, relax, eat, drink, do fun things.  All that has changed is that people can organise their holidays more easily and share it on social media.
