The Sirindhorn floating solar farm is the largest hybrid project of its kind in the world. (Photo: Jack Board)

BANGKOK: From the shoreline, the newest piece of Thailand’s renewable energy future is just a shimmer in the distance. The pure scale of this ambitious project is difficult to appreciate from afar.

Forty years ago, the face of this land was shaped by the construction of the Sirindhorn Dam, a then-controversial project designed to provide hydropower and irrigation water to the area. Once again, enterprise is harnessing nature here.

The reservoir is now home to the world’s largest hybrid solar-hydropower project. Installed on the surface of the water are 144,000 separate solar panels, the equivalent of 100 football fields.

I hope that this system will connect to an energy storage system such as Telsa's storage

megapack system to prove a steady and balanced energy flow to the electric grid vs. load dump or grid load shortage.

Thought they would build a floating solar panel farm in the main streets of Pattaya. They always seem to be under water even after the millions spent on drainage.

Electricity + water; what could possibly go wrong......

Oh the cynicism! Good idea, well done Thailand. Anything that takes away from burning coal can only be good… and with land at a premium. Need to do more however as with much of Asia as it’ll hit you guys more than most. China take note you so n sos!!!

Must be a bu##er cleaning all the dirt off of them?

Actually a good idea. Needs to be expanded drastically to cover the country but the first step is always the most important.

it's a hybrid, solar during the day, existing hydro to cover the night time load. Actually a pretty clever idea.

Well done Thailand. Looking forward to more sustainable energy in the future and hooking up my PTT/Foxconn EV in about 3 years time. ????

Electric energy can be converted to hydrogen .

Hydrogen is the best possible fuel for fuel cell powered trucks , as they can do the ' fill up ' at ( " petrol stations " ) that sell hydrogen ( in the future ) .

Battery powered electric cars with a limited range are better for cities ...

The panels will get nicked like the batteries on the floating tsunami warning stations.

China is the worst in terms of coal plants.  But, if they live up to their word, that might be changing.  About time.  The air in China is horrible.  Not much better here...

Quite, and I would think the panels must reduce the evaporation a bit. A lot of hydro to go at, but looks like only 8 planned so far.

Maybe wind is the way to go.  I was shocked to see Thailand is running out of natural gas?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_in_Thailand

Thailand's natural gas reserves are projected to run out in 2021, and Thailand began importing expensive liquefied natural gas in 2011.

Dirt from the dirty, polluted, carcinogenic air?

Absolutely.

It'll work for 6 months then stuff will fail and it'll be quietly abandoned.

Like they did with this 170Mbht failure on Koh Larn, now abandoned.

Time to get rid of them large gas vehicles. A few years back a lorry accidentally drove into a gold shop not that far from us. Some low life on the street thought they would take a chance, but the lorry blew up killing the looters and shop manager, I think the shop and a customer survived but badly injured. With the level of RTA in Thailand I am surprised there not a few more of these mobile bombs going off.

I think with renewables it has to be a mix, and with more sun than wind solar is not a bad place to start.

So how many will die because of the inactivity for 5 years? And do they plan to increase it during that time?

What is that?

Would be interesting to see how the anchor points are controlled for the different heights in water.
