A UK woman's trip to Thailand turned into a holiday nightmare after she returned a positive coronavirus test and was immediately whisked away to hotel quarantine.

TikTok user Megan Meeke and her partner Dyl Murray arrived in Bangkok the day before New Year's Eve, doing a PCR test on arrival.

"[We] were told our PCR on arrival were inconclusive then positive but no one speaks English," she said in the TikTok.

"We were in an ambulance [and] now have to quarantine for 10 days... what is happening?"

Well, love, it's going to be a lot more expensive if you say anything bad about the hotel on your social media. May find the hotel bill and quarantine is the least of your problems

I'm sorry, regardless of whether this woman makes a TikTock living out outta this stuff it's stupid.

Who in their corn fed mind gets on a long haul flight to any tin pot third world country without knowing the risks that rules will change on a dime, and you risk either deportation or your two week vacation holed up somewhere in quarantine.

No sympathy sorry to say

  • Popular Post

I'm sorry but I have no sympathy for someone who leaves a highly infected area of the world insisting they are somehow entitled to travel to a foreign country, knowing that the world has been in a pandemic turmoil for over a year and then takes to social media to complain.

That's tantamount to booking a volcanic tour and complaining about the heat. :wai:

It is really saddening to read these stories again and again. The other day was a Norwegian family which had ended up in quarantine hospital because a family member had tested positive for Covid-19.

Imagine being in their place and all the hopes of being in a nice and relaxing holidays turns into a nightmare of quarantine and isolation in a second when your test shows positive. It is not really worth all the risks of traveling at this point of time IMHO and I don’t think most people are aware of those risks.

You've got to be barking mad to try to come to Thailand for a holiday these days.

Unless you've been living under a rock since 2018 you REALLY should be aware of travel risks during this pandemic. ????

And Thailand wonders why no tourists are coming?

You get on a plain negative and hours later Thailand tells you that you are positive and to pay the quarantine.

Sounds suspicious?

I am afraid there are many cases which point to the contrary.

I really don’t know what they think or how much they know about the risks but it seems to me that these are normal families who probably think traveling to Thailand is the same as traveling in Europe nowadays.

One reason I haven't returned yet, not worried about covid, it's the consequences of a positive test plus you have to go through the same worry to return home for flight. Bet there's a few tourists sweating in Pattaya about getting their PCR for return flight home.

Then to them I say: "Google is your friend". :wai:

Reminds me of a question on an O-NET test:

"John was besotted for not listening to his father before jumping into the water."

Circle the best meaning of the bolded word.

A. Made to feel ashamed

B. Made to feel hurt

C. Made to feel foolish

D. Made to feel ignorant

Maybe if she did things like pre-trip research, considered contingencies etc her travel tales wouldn't get much attention in Social Media Land.  But maybe that's part of the entitlement of the younger generation: we don't need planning, the world should have these things laid out for us.

Once was in Hat Yai waiting at a mini-bus office to get to Penang, chatting with the lad who runs the desk.  Two girls from somewhere in northern Europe appear, they looked younger than 18.  I asked if they had any Malaysian money, I'd buy if off them.  They wouldn't even look at me.  They tell the lad they want a minivan to Bangkok.  The lad doesn't understand them.  It's the minivan that's the problem, I have to translate to minibus for him several times.  The girl who is doing all the talking (in English) keeps confusing him by saying minivan.  As he's writing out  their tickets I ask him how long it takes to get to Bkk, he says "11 hours."  The two respond in unison "11 hours !?!???"  Didn't sound right, since from Chumphon it takes 8 hours, so my guess would be at least 15.  Maybe at a suicidal speed...

They wandered off, probably to find another kiosk who would promise them a shorter time span.  Ever think to look at a map, girls?

Have I missed something here?

Not sure that is the correct word?

I understood besotted to mean infatuated with someone.

For example, I was besotted with my geography teacher ????

I think the Thai's could help by making it super clear what the rules are. I have a booking in February for Phuket made optimistically in November. Though it was a cheapie they are letting me change it to a later date which is nice. Thanks Jetstar.

Well using English, to be precise, you’re quarantining because you returned a positive covid test-somehow.

Not sure how to explain that in tik tok though.

  • Popular Post

And if you test positive while on your holiday from the many test stations even to go eat in a resturant if positive you can be whisked away to quarrantine its a new 72 hour directive from chon buri chief thief, cruel but Its a real money spinner.

Avoid thailand the trusted destination

"Turns into Quarantine horror" ... what absolute nonsense and BS. Typical attention grabbing. She is lucky to be in good care and in a hotel quarantine and as for "non-one speaks English" what a load of rubbish.  For once the slander laws could serve a useful purpose - she should apologise at once.

err'   welcome to Thailand love ...     darling, didn't you read the fine print at the bottom of the page  !!  :cheesy:

If you get a text back saying inconclusive it may mean that you had the virus even if you got over it and had a hospital note saying you’re good to go it’s still may show up as inconclusive or possibly positive weeks after having it a lot of people don’t realize it and they get tested here in Thailand they’ll end up being in quarantine TIT

A very well seasoned international traveler.

Got to be first real joke on Asean Now 2022.

Ps just wish it had not been a Brit that said that.

Of course ..... The tourist again.. Thailand want that tourists come to visit, but putting them in quarantine will damage the image much more . Better close the borders again.  Of course you can test negative but in 72 hours much can happen, but take care of your guests and at least give answers and use qualified personnel to explain things instead of only Thai speaking people.. there are English speaking Thais too

exactly, I have looked around at many dumb idiots throwing caution to the wind and ignoring basic rules - there are too many for the police to do much out it

It will be very interesting as they prepare for going to the airport which will involve producing a negative PCR test.......................have fun with that

No sympathy sorry to say

Sounds dramatic, wouldn't the Covid Insurance cover her, or maybe the cover does not start until you are released from Quarantine, anyone know the answer to this??

She should consider herself lucky she's been allowed hotel quarantine and not whisked away to a field hospital!
