Why are there so many haters on this site?

Just wondering why are there so many haters here that keep complaining about Thailand and praising the western “democracy”, yet, they are not lining up at the gates for international departures.
 

Maybe it’s because the corrupted Thais handcuffed them to a coconut tree?

Western society is boring but you really get used to processes being put in place and those processes being followed. Once you move to Thailand you realise what a cluster f&@k things are.

 

i recently finished a renovation on my condo, a 2 week job blew out to 3 months, it was escalated to the biggest boss at home pro sukhumviht in Pattaya (who was doing the Reno) who had to personally come to my place on multiple occasions to check the work (all this for a 40k baht job).

 

A few things which occurred. 
1) Home pro hired anyone as subcontractor and denied liability when the contractors wife who he was “training” cleaned my fridge and table with a scourer. In the end contractor had to pay me out 10k baht for new fridge doors and the table was sent off 3 times to get repaired (before I threw it out the third time)

 

2) TVs were wrapped in plastic and put face down on the bed. Painting plastic was then put down on the bed and the new painting team stood on 2 out of 3 tvs. Broken. Store Manager gave me 10k off a new TV and staff of course took the broken tv home to fix

 

3) They robbed me of 500b of classic Thai notes I was collecting 

 

4) They painted one roof with super gloss wall paint and one wall with matte roof paint 

 

5) My Thai building manager then said to me once it was all over “Why are you cleaning and painting yourself?” After 3 months of incompetence.

6) 2 brand new Samsung q65 tvs had severe shadowing in the dark and had to return both. Once at the shop I asked if this has happened before and they said no only farang complain ??? Lol

 

Basically everything had to be done 2 and 3 times, they have not grasped the do it once and do it properly antic because their time is worth so little. 

This is just a snippet of a 5 month working holiday where I decided to renovate a condo. 
 

Extrapolate this into everyday society, and dealing with “non educated” thais (cannot put everyone in a bucket) or should I say “Not used to western standards” thais. On every single level you come face to face with total incompetence and id say a well raised 11 year old Aussie kid has more common sense than most thais.

 

(Not talking about BKK or the thais I worked with in an office environment) 

 

Basically if you are going on a holiday and you don’t need more interaction than ordering a taxi you will run into this continual incompetence. 
 

Actually the only time things were done to my standards was interacting with my Visa agent who had everything down pat from visa extensions, to getting Thai license and opening a bank account.

 

My frustration was immense for only 5 months. Imagine being an expat after 20 years, living in a village and dealing with locals on the reg you will probably see they all started off with Rose Colored glasses and slowly the place has made them angry.

Why bother to TRY to do that? 

From my Pattaya area POV, it's a lower budget Miami. Don't overthink it!

I can understand your frustrations as most foreigners and myself  have experienced something like you have .

Best alternative is do the work yourself .

If that is not possible then buy property that needs no renovation work .

I paid for a concrete floor to be levelled out recently . The whole of the work done now needs to be removed .

First time I have hired people for some time . Now I have bought a concrete grinder for 28000 baht to have a new attempt at levelling the floor . Anyone out there who wants to buy a used concrete floor grinder when i have finished let me know

For me this place is so much better then the current west environment there is no comparison.  When I go back after about 2 weeks, I can't wait to leave.  Too many issues there to even talk about.

Think it's normal and healthy to look at the positives and negatives of where you are. Reading a nuanced discussion is welcome. Reading about someone getting upset over an extra 100 baht at a national park or the fact that a few forms need completing once a year, with no thoughtful solution offered, gets old fast.

I will say when people put 'democracy' in inverted commas it tends to be because they think that, as no democracy is perfect, that democracy is not something to aim for. Disagree. But I'll leave it to the news section to elaborate on those type of topics.

Most of us have learned to go with the flow and avoid the nonsense like letting Thais handle Tvs (or non-stick saucepans).

 

IMHO life is great here!

You failed to mention what your condo would cost you in Sydney or your reno's would cost to do in Sydney if you could actually find someone as there is a major shortage of tradies and they will take both your arms in the process.

 

It appears you don't have any connections in Thailand of skilled workers hence the reason things turned out the way they did.

 

Just had 6 power points added and two recessed lights replaced 500 baht for labour, changed two roofs coverings of metal sheeting, 3.2 metres x 1.2 metres each x 15 sheets, 2,600 baht labour, all materials supplied by me.

 

Prior to leaving Sydney, I had some tiling done which I could have done myself but was too busy making the bacon and getting ready to leave the place to come and live here, a small area on both sides of the kitchen walls and around the window, very little cutting, tiles were 600 x 200 an easy 2 hour job, $400 or 10,000 baht, and he was the 3rd guy I called, the other 2 were a no show.

 

Thailand is not perfect, but neither is Sydney, but I can tell you one thing for sure, I will survive here in Thailand longer than I would in Sydney and that's without working, rents here are cheap, properties are cheap, labour is cheap, you have everything here that you have in Sydney, $12 drivers license, vs $190 drivers license and the list can go on.

 

Life's more relaxed here, but then again, it's not for everyone and if you think buying a condo in Pattaya is going to work out for you, well it's not, i.e. unless your prepared to accept Thailand for what it is, like I said, it's not perfect, but to me, it's far better than Sydney if your wanting a far less stressful (controlled) life and great weather all year round.

Give it time 'reflectionx'. Once upon a time we were all the same as you and couldn't see the 'forest for the trees'. No doubt that in time you will become one of us.

Haters.......yes, they hate themselves.     That is a fact.  They (haters) have given up...... for....

 

nice built house, amenities....................one room, fan

real beef, wine, etc..............................fake and cheap "meat"

clean air.............................polluted air

safe roads...............................death roads

no passport...........................90 day check-in

expensive (need money).................cheap (can be poor)

social life-.....................................alone

healthy diet.........................................7 11

morals...........................................bars and bar girls

opportunity............................nothing

seasons..........................................death heat

 

I definitely won't retire in Thailand, and I know what it is..... a place to simply go off the grid and escape for a few years before returning to reality.  it's a scarlet letter for sure....means things went wrong in your home country and you need a break.  luckily I can go back.  

 

if stuck here forever and unable to enjoy nice things, I can imagine how someone gets very bitter.  who wants to be stuck on a motorbike eating 20 baht noodle soup and thinking they are successful?    so you hate. lol.

I can assure you many taxi drivers are also quite incompotent .....     Lol

 

however,  after being here for more than 20yrs you come to realize that it's useless to complain, get angry, stress out ..... as it's never going to get any better so just laugh it off and go with the flow jack.
